About Niki

I am a graduate of the University of South Florida (class of 2021) and am currently attending medical school in New York. Being a medical student, I know how difficult and disheartening school can sometimes be. I'm here to help you not only succeed, but also to help you develop a love for learning.
I scored a 34/36 on the ACT (35/36 on the reading section, 35/36 on the writing section, and 10/12 on the essay portion), a 5/5 on the AP Language Arts exam, and a 6/7 on the IB English HL exam. I also enrolled in multiple humanities and creative writing courses in undergrad that helped me prepare in communication through writing as well as gain a nuanced understanding of classic literature, like Dante's Inferno. I will most definitely help you to improve your writing, reading, and annotating skills for school and standardized tests!
In addition, I've tutored kids in English for almost 2 years now and they have noticed a huge improvement in their understanding and command of the English language through reading and writing - and it showed in their grades too! I have also been helping high school and undergraduate students learn how to effectively write and edit their own essays for top scores. I'm so excited to work with you and share my love for reading and writing with you as well.

About the lesson

For ACT preparation: When it comes to ACT preparation, I will walk you through the exact method I used to ace the reading and writing sections. We will focus on summarizing the readings, identifying key words, and recognizing question stem patterns. For the writing portion, we will work on basic grammar skills and context clues to answer each question. In addition to identifying the correct answer, we will work together to see why that answer is correct AND why every other answer is wrong - this is a KEY component to acing any standardized exam. We will work on building this habit early so you can carry it in any of your future academic endeavors.
For annotations: We will work on understanding the uses and effects of figurative language in writing. I will have you annotate as usual for class and identify key words, phrases, paragraphs, and other portions of the author's writing to master the use of figurative language for you to truly understand the themes that have been hidden in each piece of literature. We will prepare for class discussions to help you contribute in class so that you can feel confident in your participation as well as learn how to carry these same techniques over into your own writing.
For essay writing: I will work with you through the whole process of essay writing, from brainstorming and creating an outline for your essay all the way to the editing and review stages. We will learn how to avoid repetition and redundancies as well as how to properly use advanced vocabulary to elevate your essay to the next level.
