About Isabel

My name is Izzy Hasse, I’m 28 years old and I have loved math since a young age (I frequently pursue math education extracurricularly because I enjoy it so much!). I love to teach because it gives me an opportunity to share that joy with others. I also have a rich creative life involving dance, fiction writing, and visual art. I live in downtown Portland with my cat Beebee.

About the lesson

Hello! My name is Izzy Hasse and I’m a professional tutor specializing in helping students who struggle with math due to neurodivergence, math anxiety, or it just not being quite your specialty!

Experience:
I have 4 years of tutoring experience and have worked with students ages 8 to adult on numerous subjects, from elementary math to high school level algebra, geometry, and statistics. I have helped students who were behind in math to catch up to their classmates, and worked with many students who lacked confidence in math, helping them discover and work with their strengths and even to enjoy learning math. I also hold an Associate’s degree from Portland Community College where I received straight A’s in my math coursework.

Approach:
I individualize my approach to each student’s unique needs, rather than sticking to one approach or curriculum. I can guide students through homework or test prep exercises given by a teacher, but I can also design a pathway to help students catch up if they lack sufficient understanding of past material and need additional support outside of homework.

My demeanor is always friendly and nonjudgmental, responding with curiosity so I can get to the heart of any lack of understanding and address it with clarification tailored to the student’s needs, rather than repeating explanations. I make frequent use of visuals and real-world examples. I share my enthusiasm for math learning with all students, encouraging their curiosity—while also bringing an attitude of empathy for their struggles and for the tragically common distaste for math, which I find to be a truly inspiring subject.

Rates and location:
My rate is $35/hour. Lessons are typically an hour long and may take place once or twice weekly or as-needed.

I can teach virtually over Zoom or in a location of your choice within the Portland area (such as a library, cafe, or in your home).
