About Aaron
I have been tutoring math for a decade in Miami-Date and Broward counties as a freelance tutor, and I was a learning assistant for FIU's introductory logic courses. Although most of my tutoring has been one-on-one (either in-home, at FIU, or at a public library), I have some experience teaching in the classroom.
My passion for math came about during my time studying economics at FIU. Math opened my eyes to logic, which prompted me to study philosophy at FIU about 4 years after earning my economics degree. My passion for the subject matter knows no bounds. As a personal hobby, I have been building a small library of antique logic and math books, and it serves as a window into how those subjects have been taught over time. Although tutoring others in math certainly helped me to improve my own math skills, it also made me very interested in learning about how to teach, and my career as a tutor has been an ongoing process of always learning how to improve my teaching.

For grades K-12, I tutor all math subjects as well as introductory logic.
My approach as a tutor begins by letting the student show me what they already understand. This gives me the context that I need to see what the student is struggling to grasp and/or what skills the student needs to strengthen. After getting a sense of these sorts of things, I ask the student leading-questions that are intended to help guide the student as they reason through a problem. Although this method usually goes a long way, the student sometimes will require a demonstration of how to reason through the kind of problem they are trying to solve, so I (when necessary) will provide a demonstration using a different problem of the same kind. After observing the demonstration, the student will be in a position to make an analogy between the problem I solved and the problem that they are trying to solve.
On certain rare occasions, I even will tell a student an answer to a question if the student seems like they need a mental-model of the kind of problem that they are being asked to solve. I call this the Jeopardy technique, because Jeopardy is a game whereby the contestants infer questions from answers (rather than answer questions). This also could be thought of as the reverse-engineering method (akin to learning how a machine works by taking the machine apart). Once my student has the necessary mental-model, I can return to asking them leading-questions that will help guide their reasoning through the problem-solving thought process.
