About Dave
Dave Hanson has spent over 20 years writing, acting, and making a living out of make-believe—plays produced from London to Tokyo, TV writing, acting & producing credits include hit shows like Chelsea Lately (E!), Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central) and Inside College Football (CBS Sports).
Dave's work for film and stage has been part of theater and film festivals across the world and his plays have been produced in multiple languages. These days he calls New York City home, where he's outnumbered by his wife, his son, and Gus, their 100-pound dog who runs the household.

I bring a working writer's perspective to every lesson, grounded in a BA in Theatre Arts and English Literature and years of professional playwriting and screenwriting. My approach treats craft as something learnable: we break down structure, character, dialogue, and voice into concrete tools rather than abstract talent.
Teaching Method: I combine close textual analysis (studying published plays, screenplays, and prose) with hands-on writing exercises. Students learn by imitating strong models, then applying those techniques to their own work. I emphasize revision as the real engine of good writing—first drafts are just raw material.
Typical Lesson: We start by reviewing the student's most recent pages or a target text, discuss what's working structurally and dramatically, then move into a focused technique (e.g., scene structure, subtext, exposition) with a short writing exercise applying it. Lessons end with clear, actionable notes for the next draft.
What Sets Me Apart: I've written across mediums—plays, screenplays, comedy, and prose—so I can adapt instruction to whatever form a student is working in, rather than teaching one narrow style.
