About Alfred

I'm a professional video editor and a video artist. I've been making short films for over twenty years, winning awards, awarded grant funding, shown in festivals and museums, and I love to teach cinema and media production.

My students have been cinema students at university level and they have been youth and adults interested in media-making who have never picked up a camera. I have worked with students developing projects from basic short narrative videos to documentaries and experimental personal films.

Being an active video producer I share my own work as inspiration and teaching tools, and upon seeing my work students will notice the range of styles and genres I have worked with and feel free to explore their own "voice" and style.

MY PROFESSIONAL HISTORY
I started in animation and moved into special visual effects, all the while developing short films of all genres - narrative videos, documentaries, experimental films, music videos, and worked as a professional videographer, video editor and storyboard artist.

After a gig doing storyboards for a Sean Penn project, I started teaching at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and then became the video editor for actress/director of Acting for Film and Television Department Diane Baker, consulting with directing students in the masters program and editing student acted scenes, demos and various documentaries and spots for the program.

I've developed easy to follow and remember rules that film schools don't always teach and could only be developed through experience in the field.

If you view my work you will see the breadth of style and genres I work with. While pointing students to the standards of professionalism, I also seek to support the student in developing their particular interests and to guide them toward an understanding of the relevance of those interests in the bigger picture of the film, television and media world.

I have a respect for "Hollywood" filmmaking, documentary, video art, experimental and personal video, and basic personal growth through creativity and creative projects.

OVERVIEW
I teach what I know - how to make professional and award-winning videos through project-based lessons.

I start with initial ideas and interests of the student and guide them through the steps of the video making process including special visual effects, and final cut. I have special experience in fantastic imagery and low budget, practical effects (low-tech meeting high-tech). I have experience in helping others identify the story they want to tell or the video styles they want to explore.

As an educator, I have instructed adults and youth as well as tutored with editing. Being an active video producer I share my own work as inspiration and teaching tools, and upon seeing my work students will notice the range of styles and genres I have worked with and feel free to explore their own "voice" and style.

LESSON PLANS
Lesson plans usually center around making a final video, this means the initial lessons deal with pre-production - getting the ideas and story down and into visual terms (storyboarding etc.) Then they move into the conventions of shooting practices (proper framing, proper blocking of actors and objects, complete coverage of a scene and the basics of editing). Then the lessons move into post-production - editing, sound, titles.
Students use their own equipment and editing platforms and lessons are written out with full instruction and expectations. These lessons move the project through each step to completion and the student gets feedback - looking at what works and what might be improved.

A student may decide that they want to focus on a particular style or genre or technique and fully explore it. There may be an area of media making they like best and they will be supported with this through the adjustment of the lessons.

LESSON EXAMPLE
Example of a pre-production lesson would be for the student to come up with several story ideas that fit the format of identifying the want in a main character, developing the conflict and illustrating the attempts and final crisis that lead to the story resolution. They may write this out in script form (which an example of format would be included) or draw out storyboards.

In this same lesson, the student would explore some basic filmmaking standards of framing (viewing examples I supply) and take several video clips that properly frame subjects or objects.

The student then receives feedback (after posting or submitting work samples) which explore various ways the shots work or can work more effectively.

The lessons, as I've mentioned are designed to move a project through to completion but can also be expanded for a more thorough understanding or practice - based on the student's interest and need.

I love filmmaking and I'm interested in innovating new approaches and experimenting with imagery and story and so I'm a good match for those with a eye on the unconventional. At the same time I've taught the rigor of the professional standards that filmmakers need to understand for industry work.
