About Samantha

Soprano and Violinist Samantha Burke is the Founder and Director of
Burke Music Academy, where she teaches voice, strings, and piano. She is
a student of Amy Shoremount-Obra (The Metropolitan Opera, NY) at
Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music (M.M.) and Erika Kiesewetter
(Concertmaster of The American Symphony, NY) (B.M.) from Bard
College. Additionally, she studied closely with renowned Hungarian
musicologist Peter Laki, developing a senior thesis on the opera Otello from
Desdemona’s perspective and later creating a concert lecture series focused
on making opera accessible to wider audiences. Samantha is a frequent
scholarship recipient and has won awards in both Georgia and New York
competitions.
As a young child, her love of music led her to perform at the Sydney Opera
House with the Atlanta Young Singers at just 13 years old.
In the 2024 season, Samantha joined the New York Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra for the New York
premiere of Émigré by Aaron Zigman at Lincoln Center. During the same season in Atlanta, she was a featured
artist for the grand exhibit season opening at MODA (Museum of Design Atlanta). She was also highlighted in
two publications, Canvas Rebel and Voyage ATL Magazine, for her work as an entrepreneur, educator, and
leading classical artist in Atlanta.
Her 2023 season included several premieres, such as a new principal role, Sister Rat, in Cecil Taylor’s A Rat’ s
Mass at New York’s The Graduate Center. She reprised her role as Tess in the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera
OMAR by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels and covered the role of Julie during Spoleto Festival’s world
premiere of the same opera in 2022. Samantha also performed in a concert alongside mezzo-soprano J’nai
Bridges, which aired on NPR.
In 2021, Samantha premiered a recital-documentary titled Essential and performed the title role in Carmen
(virtual edition) with Brooklyn College Opera. During the 2020 season, she was scheduled to perform as a
soloist with the New York Philharmonic at David Geffen Hall alongside the Brooklyn College Conservatory
Choirs (event canceled due to COVID-19). That same year, she was a semi-finalist in the New York Art Song
Preservation Society Competition. Samantha has participated in masterclasses with esteemed artists such as
Angel Blue, Ricky Ian Gordon, Libby Larsen, and Jake Heggie, among others.
As a musical ambassador and activist, Samantha was invited to perform at the 2018 United Nations education
fundraiser and convention as a young artist with the International Masters of Opera NYC.
Her competition achievements include being a 2017 finalist in the Kennedy Center’s VSA competition and a
2016 regional finalist for the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
Equally at home in both recital and opera, Samantha has performed notable roles such as Second Lady in
Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (Miami Opera Institute and The American Symphony), the title role in Massenet’s
Samantha Burke
Soprano & Violinist
Manon (The American Symphony), and principal roles in Bard College’s Opera Workshop. She was also the
soprano soloist for the 2014 Southeastern premiere of Alan Bullard’s oratorio A Light in the Stable.
A skilled violinist with over 20 years of experience, Samantha has performed with orchestras and ensembles in
Atlanta, Philadelphia, and New York. Her repertoire spans from Mozart to Shostakovich, as well as modern
works. At the age of 15, she was awarded the Tim Redovian Scholarship in Atlanta and attended the
Philadelphia International Music Festival, hosted by members of the Philadelphia Philharmonic.
As a young teenager growing up in the Deep South, Samantha Burke became acutely aware of her racial and
ethnic identity and the complexities of pursuing a career in classical music. During her adolescence, she
discovered Nina Simone—an artist whose story deeply resonated with her. Over the years, Ms. Burke
developed a profound appreciation for Simone’s life and work, regularly incorporating her songs and
interpretations into recital programs.
Audiences often found the juxtaposition of classical repertoire alongside jazz and folk songs popularized by
Simone both striking and thought-provoking. This programming choice invited listeners to question why such
genre-blending was not more common in classical performance traditions. Inspired by Simone’s approach to
curating music that reflected the pressing social and political issues of her time, Ms. Burke continues to honor
her legacy. Through her performances, she pairs Simone’s works with classical pieces, using music as a
powerful commentary on contemporary social and political events.
Samantha currently resides in Atlanta, where she enjoys spending time with her children and vibrant South
American family.
