Leonie is one of our best English tutors. High-quality profile and excellent qualifications, organised and responsive to lesson requests, appreciated by their students!

About Leonie

I have always loved reading, writing and communication, and I genuinely enjoy helping young people grow in confidence and discover that English is something they can succeed in and even enjoy.

I understand that every student learns differently, and I pride myself on being patient, approachable and encouraging. Some students need help building confidence, some need support with organisation or exam technique, and others simply need lessons explained in a focused and clear way. I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes without feeling judged or pressured.

Alongside my tutoring experience, I have worked in schools in both teaching assistant and wellbeing support roles, which has given me a strong understanding of the different challenges young people can face in education, including anxiety, low confidence and additional learning needs such as autism and ADHD.

I especially enjoy helping students who may previously have struggled with English or doubted their own abilities. Seeing students become more confident in their writing, analysis and self-expression is one of the most rewarding parts of tutoring for me.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy reading, psychology, wellbeing, creative projects and finding ways to make learning more engaging and enjoyable.

About the lesson

A Cardiff University English LangLit graduate (2:1) and certified word nerd, I offer reliable, patient and supportive English tuition for students from Key Stage 1 through to GCSE and A-Level study. My lessons are tailored to each student’s individual needs, helping them build confidence, improve skills and feel more comfortable and competent in their English studies.

I have experience supporting students across a range of exam boards and qualifications, including AQA, WJEC, Edexcel, Cambridge and Pearson, including iGCSEs for students outside of the UK (Hong Kong, Netherlands, Germany). I have also successfully taught English as a second language.

Areas I teach include reading comprehension, spelling and grammar, language analysis, inference and connotations, persuasive and creative writing, poetry, Shakespeare and exam preparation (11+, GCSE, A-Level).

I have supported students studying a variety of texts, including:
Of Mice and Men
An Inspector Calls
A Christmas Carol
Heroes
King Lear
The Colour Purple

Alongside tutoring, I work in schools as a wellbeing project support worker and Teaching Assistant supporting students with additional learning needs such as autism and ADHD. I am passionate about children’s psychological wellbeing and believe learning should feel encouraging, engaging and achievable.

My approach focuses not only on improving grades, but also on helping students feel calmer, more capable and more confident in their own abilities. I aim to create lessons that are supportive, reliable and enjoyable, while encouraging a genuine love of reading, writing and communication.

It is my great pleasure to recommend Kirsten Mackay to become a tutor at this site. Kirsten was a student at Cardiff University and Graduated in the summer of 2020. During her time at the University, she became the Chair of the English Language Student Representatives for the School of English, Communication and Philosophy. I watched Kirsten grow in confidence in her own outstanding abilities. Kirsten chaired a Student Staff Panel with maturity and ease and this opportunity enabled her to develop her decision making, leadership, teamwork and public speaking skills all of which she did with a high standard and professional manner.

During her role as Chair for English Language Student Reps, Kirsten has also helped with student led events, as well as attending academically run Board of Studies meetings and College led meetings within the Students' Union.

Kirsten's communication, organisational and time management skills are exceptional, she has been a huge asset to our School over the last three years. She shone through during her last year of studying with her compassion, calm, friendly, kind, intelligent and approachable manner. She has been a delight to work with and I shall miss working with her. Due to her hard work, she was also nominated for a student led awards ceremony, organised by the Students' Union.

I recommend Kirsten to you to become a tutor, strongly and without reservation. She will be a wonderful addition to your company and if I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards
Sarah Millward
