About Valerie

Learning a new language is fun! If you don't already believe that, allow me to show you the way. I learned Chinese through a very immersive academic program, so much so that it was a huge part of my daily life. Three years after earning my degree in the Chinese language, it is now a piece of me that can never be taken away. The ability to read, write, and converse in Chinese is invaluable knowledge that I have a passion to share and teach.

My students can be comfortable in knowing that I am open to course feedback and will be flexible in finding methods that fit their learning preferences. I am a goal-setter and achiever, so let's work together to find the learning journey that fits your needs!

About the lesson

Comprehension, memorization, and practice make up my simple recipe for learning one of the world's most complex and invaluable languages.

I prioritize understanding my student's interests and hobbies outside the classroom, so we can incorporate vocabulary related to the activities done in their free time. I will have my student learn one document presentation per week. This could be a dialogue script, press release, personal letter, telephone transcript, etc. Each document presentation will introduce 1 to 2 new grammar rules and 10 - 30 new vocabulary words or usages. In a typical lesson, we will read the presentation aloud, dissect it into learning segments, discuss new grammar and vocabulary, and practice speaking the full presentation aloud. I will wrap up sessions by engaging the student in listening and speaking exercises aimed at the current learning objective.
Comprehension quizzes are given weekly to measure the student's grasp of the current lesson before moving forward.

I am a very patient and understanding teacher. I try to help my students relate their lives to the curriculum in any way they can imagine. I find that each student develops their own unique bond with the language. I am always here to help my students learn and retain the amazing knowledge they are capable of grasping!

My lessons are for beginner learners, mostly at the elementary and high school grade levels. I also accept adult beginner learners. I do not offer any certification or degree after the completion of my classes.
