About Lorraine
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
What sets me apart is the combination of advanced training, extensive experience, and individualized care. I work with learners from elementary through adult, adapting instruction while maintaining fidelity to the Take Flight program. I also understand the emotional impact of dyslexia and prioritize confidence-building, self-advocacy, and progress that is meaningful—not rushed.

My Approach as a Tutor:
My approach as a tutor is grounded in structured literacy, explicit instruction, and a deep respect for how individuals with dyslexia learn best. With over 15+ years of experience and as an ALTA Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP), I use evidence-based methods to systematically build reading, spelling, and written language skills while fostering confidence and independence. I believe progress happens best in a calm, supportive environment where students feel safe to take risks and ask questions.
Teaching Methods and Techniques:
I use Take Flight, a research-based, multisensory dyslexia intervention developed by Texas Scottish Rite Hospital / Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia. Instruction is:
-Explicit and systematic
-Cumulative and sequential
-Multisensory (visual, auditory, kinesthetic)
-Diagnostic and responsive to student needs
-Lessons are paced carefully, with continual review and mastery checks to ensure long-term retention and success.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
Each lesson follows a consistent, predictable structure to support learning and reduce anxiety:
-Review of previously taught concepts
-Phonological awareness and phonics practice
-Introduction of new concepts using multisensory techniques
-Guided reading and spelling practice
-Application to writing or language tasks
-Brief review and reinforcement
-All instructional materials and supplies are provided.
Who the Lessons Are For:
My lessons are designed for:
-Students with diagnosed or suspected dyslexia
-Learners with reading, spelling, or written language difficulties
-Elementary students, adolescents, and adults
-Students with IEPs or 504 plans
-Homeschool and private learners
Instruction is appropriate for beginners through advanced remediation levels.
