About Erin

I’m an experienced educator with over 14 years of high school teaching experience, and I currently serve as an adjunct faculty member at Columbia University and a visiting professor at the United Nations University for Peace. Over the years, I’ve developed AP English Literature curricula and worked with students at many different levels, from strengthening foundational skills to guiding students in producing clear, college-ready academic essays. One of my greatest strengths is helping students translate their ideas into writing that feels both authentic and academically strong.

My teaching style is structured but flexible, and always centered around the individual student. I’m a culturally responsive educator, which means I start with what already interests and motivates each student. Whether that’s pop culture, music, or television, I love helping students make meaningful connections between the stories they already care about and the literature they’re studying. This not only builds stronger understanding, but helps students feel more confident in their own voice and perspective.

I also believe that a genuine love of reading—for enjoyment, not just for school—is one of the strongest predictors of long-term success, and I bring that enthusiasm into every session. My goal is not just to help students complete assignments or prepare for exams, but to support them in becoming more confident, curious, and capable readers and writers. I approach my work with care, consistency, and professionalism, and I strive to create a learning environment where students feel supported, challenged, and excited to grow.

I approach English Literature tutoring as both a skill-building and confidence-building process, grounded in the belief that strong reading and writing skills develop through curiosity, critical thinking, and meaningful connection to the text. With 14 years of high school teaching experience and my current role as an adjunct at Columbia University, I bring a structured yet flexible approach that adapts to each student’s goals. A typical lesson begins with a brief check-in and review of prior work, followed by focused instruction, such as close reading, thesis development, essay writing, or literary analysis, and then guided practice where students actively apply these skills to their own assignments or texts. I emphasize discussion-based learning and real-world connections to help students deepen their interpretations and develop their own analytical voice. What sets me apart is not just my decades of experience, but also my relational, student-centered approach: I meet students where they are, helping them build clarity, confidence, and independence over time. I work with high school, college, and adult learners, supporting everything from foundational reading and writing skills to advanced literary analysis, academic essays, and exam preparation.
