About Ritu

I am a Glasgow-based practising artist, ceramicist and potter. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Textile Design (2014) from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in India and an MFA in Fine Art (2023) from The Glasgow School of Art.

My own practice is primarily sculptural, working with materials including clay, ceramics and metal, alongside photography and writing. I’m interested in the relationship between materials, the body, emotions and lived experience, and much of my work explores mental health, memory and the ways difficult experiences can shape how we move through everyday life.

I’ve been making (and breaking) for as long as I can remember, and my background has taken me through design, fashion, textiles, music and now contemporary art and ceramics.

I currently work part-time as an Art Assistant and also make pottery for my small business. My days are usually spent doing some combination of sculpting, welding, teaching or reading — and mostly cleaning – my house, my studio, or the workshops – there's always some cleaning!

About the lesson

Working with children has taught me that there is no single approach to teaching art. Some students are happy to work independently, while others may need more encouragement, guidance or regular check-ins to stay engaged. I adapt my approach to each student, paying attention to how they learn, what interests them and what helps them feel comfortable and confident.

Lessons can be shaped around the student’s interests and can include a wide range of materials, techniques and creative projects. This could mean making small hand-built sculptures or exploring clay and other materials, learning pottery, painting, drawing and other traditional art techniques, working with paper and mixed media, making jewellery, or experimenting with crafts and three-dimensional work. I’m happy to explore different ideas with each student and develop projects that suit their age, interests, experience and abilities.

I believe art should be a space to explore, experiment and have fun, rather than worry about getting everything “right”. I particularly enjoy introducing students to materials and processes that allow them to work with their hands, solve problems creatively and discover what they can make for themselves.

I am also beginning to volunteer as a mentor for secondary school pupils, developing my experience in building supportive one-to-one relationships with young people. This complements my studio practice, which focuses heavily on mental health, and my work as an art educator. I believe creativity can be a valuable way to build confidence, express ideas and discover new ways of thinking.

My aim is to create relaxed, supportive lessons where students feel comfortable asking questions, trying things out, making mistakes and finding their own way of making. Most importantly, I want them to enjoy the process and leave each lesson feeling that they have discovered or achieved something for themselves.
