About Kristin

Hello! My name is Kristin and I’ve been teaching elementary school as a classroom teacher for 15 years now! I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education K-6 with an endorsement in ESL K-12, and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist endorsement. I am especially passionate about helping reluctant readers build their confidence and find their love for reading by engaging their brain with multi-sensory techniques, solidifying phonemic awareness, orthographically mapping high frequency words to mastery, and mastering phonics and decoding skills with scientifically-proven, structured, and explicit methods of teaching reading. I have experience working with readers who have dyslexia, autism, or attention/focus/learning challenges that can make reading tricky, and also plenty of experience digging deeper into reading skills with advanced readers who are needing a challenge. I often begin by giving a quick phonics screener to your learner to determine where to begin first. Then, I will create a plan just for your learner based on their literacy needs and utilizing their interests and learning style! All of the strategies I use in lessons are backed by the science of reading. You can count on me to follow a research-based structured literacy approach in all lessons. I love reading and am very passionate about teaching learners how they can become more confident readers and learn to LOVE reading as they strengthen their skills.

About the lesson

If your learner could benefit from private, individualized to their specific interests and educational needs, quality tutoring from an experienced, patient, engaging, positive, and creative educator, I’d love to help. This one-on-one tutoring class will be created, designed, and individualized specifically for your child, based on their current needs, desire to be challenged (or presented with material and activities at their correct level of difficulty), or if your child would benefit from a different adult in addition to their family member, to assist with academics. Often, students work in a different manner for someone who isn't their family member, especially when it comes to school work, which can be a relief for families! We can meet once per week, or several times per week. It is completely dependent upon what would be best for your learner. I hold a current teaching certificate, along with a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist endorsement and a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with an ELL endorsement and 15 years of elementary general education teaching experience in a public school in the USA. All lessons and curriculum that I use follow research backed by the Science of Reading, a body of knowledge that has shown how our brains learn to read. I have taught (and loved) many students with a wide variety of additional needs, such as dyslexia, autism, or learning/focus/behavior challenges that CAN make reading tricky. I have some specialized training in Orton Gillingham techniques and several hours of reading and research devoted to learning about Science of Reading and structured literacy methods. Also, I have plenty of experience with high ability learners and always try my best to challenge them to read and comprehend at advanced levels.
