About Douglas

As a graduate student completing my Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I am trained to 'meet people where they are.' I listen to the students' needs and work with them to find the most accessible path forward on the project that they are focusing on. I grew up poor in the city of Houston, and was told that my family 'were not college people' - so I did not pursue college until I was 53 years old. This helps me maintain a peer-level understanding of higher education and the transition from a 'blue-collar' work experience to being a student learner who must adapt to various teaching styles.

About the lesson

I first assist the student in understanding the prompt provided by the instructor; Second - the topic or focus is determined, followed by the development of a thesis statement or research question; Third - the student and I develop an outline for the paper, with paragraphs or sections identified, based on the thesis/research question; Fourth - we agree on the content for each part and a plan is established for how the student can work on sections to meet the planned completion date. We check in on the progress on the agreed-upon schedule. With subject tutoring, we will utilize the assigned textbooks and supplemental tools to assist the student in learning visually, auditorily, and with reading/writing. What sets me apart as a tutor is 25 years of experience working in a youth development program that also trained adults in servant leadership and in teaching/learning skill development. My lessons would be applicable for high school (grade 10-12), all undergraduate degree levels (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior), and graduate school students (Masters and Doctoral).

Details

The travel differential is added if the driving distance is over 30 miles to the area where the student wishes to meet. The hourly rate is commensurate with pay scales at higher education institutions, and it is ten percent lower than the average cost per hour for a tutor in the area designated for my services. Tutor-created teaching materials are also included in the hourly cost.
