About WALERIA

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Languages from the Federal University of Paraíba - UFPB (1985), Specialization in English Language from UFPB (1992), Master of Arts from UFPB (2005) and PhD in Linguistics from UFPB (2010). I am an English Language teacher currently retired and living in the United States, where I work as a freelancer, giving English classes online to Brazilian students, doing volunteer work for the church I attend, and being a wife and housewife. I have experience in the area of languages, with emphasis on teaching English, Applied Linguistics to Language Teaching, Teaching Methodology and Language Acquisition. As a teacher of English as a foreign language, I have always sought to motivate my students to learn, not only emphasizing the importance of English on the world stage, but also seeking to prepare interesting and motivating classes. One of the most rewarding things about my job is being able to contribute to the growth of my students, not only in terms of specific knowledge of the language, but also by getting them to know other cultures, lifestyles, different ways of seeing the world. My own life has always been an example of how learning English can make a difference in people's lives. I feel fulfilled when I am in the classroom. There is no better profession!

About the lesson

I am a 56 year old Brazilian woman, full of life and energy. My native language is Portuguese. I love having contact with people, teaching and learning from them. My experience as a teacher covers high school and college students, therefore teenagers and young adults. In high school, my students were on average 15 to 18 years old. And my classes had 40 students. In college, students averaged 18 to 25 years of age, and classes averaged 25 students. As I taught at a public school and university, my students were, in general, of less favored social class, often with learning difficulties. Particularly in high school, my biggest challenge was to motivate students to learn. As we adopted textbooks in Brazilian schools, whose emphasis is on written comprehension, another challenge was to look for alternatives (other resources, such as videos, movie segments, commercials, comic strips, etc.), in order to promote students' contact with native speakers, providing opportunities for them to hear and speak in English. My approach, in summary, is more communicative, aiming to present the language in real situations, so that the student can then practice it. However, there is a way to go in acquiring the necessary vocabulary for expression, as well as the search for proper pronunciation. The important thing is to show the student that he will be able to learn and that I am here to help him/her.
