About Daisy
In my 5 years of flute instruction, I have come to view teaching as a deeply collaborative, student-centered process. My first priority is to establish a supportive, focused environment where students feel safe exploring, asking questions, and making mistakes. Every new student begins with tone production, breathing technique, and physical comfort with the instrument—using long-tone exercises, breathing games, and tone-matching activities to build control and confidence. As we move into articulation, scales, and rhythm, I integrate technical drills with real music so that practice always feels purposeful. I emphasize ear training and internal rhythm early, helping students count with independence and tune to themselves and others. We explore a wide range of repertoire—classical, folk, contemporary, and student-selected genres—so students experience different styles and expressive techniques. Improvisation and composition are introduced gently, often through small guided activities that spark creativity while reinforcing scale and rhythm patterns. I believe in making music theory accessible and relevant, tying it directly to the music being learned. I tailor my approach to individual learning styles, setting personalized goals, offering constructive feedback, and using resources like practice journals, audio tracks, and visual aids to support different types of learners. One of my most impactful teaching journeys was working with a flutist recovering from a hand injury—we adjusted technique, introduced new practice habits, and celebrated every breakthrough until she was confidently performing again. Ultimately, I want each student to experience both mastery and joy—to play the flute not only with technical confidence but with a voice that is uniquely their own.

Flute teaching, in my view, is not a one-size-fits-all process. Every student brings a unique set of experiences, motivations, and learning preferences to their instrument, and I see it as my responsibility to meet them where they are while guiding them forward with clarity, creativity, and care. My teaching philosophy emphasizes technical depth, expressive confidence, and meaningful student-teacher collaboration.
At the heart of flute playing is breath, and that’s where I begin—with exercises that connect body awareness to tone production. I teach students how to use their air consciously and efficiently, using long tones, harmonics, and phrasing etudes to explore how subtle shifts in air direction and support affect sound. We discuss how to form a flexible embouchure and use relaxed posture to allow full resonance. As students progress, we build finger agility, articulation variety, and dynamic control through scales, études, and tone shaping exercises. Technique is always taught in service of expression. When we work on a piece of music, we discuss it as a living work of art.
I ask students questions like: What is the emotional arc here? Where does tension build or release? What story do you want to tell? This kind of interpretation work encourages students to move beyond “just playing the notes” and develop a personal connection with the music. Repertoire is selected with a balance of challenge and enjoyment. I draw from the classical canon as well as contemporary and popular pieces that match the student’s interests. I often invite students to explore music from their cultural heritage or popular music they enjoy outside the classroom, adapting it for flute when necessary. This approach helps students see themselves in their music and builds motivation.
Music theory and ear training are built into lessons through short, engaging activities—analyzing phrases, recognizing patterns, and transposing short motifs. I also introduce basic improvisation to students ready for it. These exercises deepen understanding and promote musical agility, reinforcing that music is something to be explored and created—not just performed. With students who are preparing for recitals, auditions, or exams, I provide long-term planning and feedback systems. We break large goals into smaller, manageable milestones.
We hold regular mock auditions or studio performances to build comfort with playing under pressure. I help students develop coping strategies for nerves and offer tools for focused, effective practice. One particularly memorable moment was watching a student perform their own arrangement of a video game score at a school talent show—an idea they proposed and executed with growing pride. In addition to traditional instruction, I integrate digital tools into the learning process.
Students use rhythm and tuning apps, submit practice recordings, and receive curated listening playlists. These tools support consistency and keep practice dynamic. Ultimately, my mission is to help students become musically fluent and emotionally engaged artists. I want each student to find their own voice on the instrument, and to leave lessons feeling seen, capable, and inspired to make music—wherever that may lead them.
