About Caroline

I hold a double honours degree in English and Drama from Goldsmiths, University of London, along with teaching qualifications from Sheffield Hallam and Sussex universities. I've taught English Literature, Language, Drama, and EFL for over 25 years, in the UK and abroad, including as a Head of Department.
I'm kind, but also direct with students about exactly where they're dropping marks or not yet secure in a grade band — vague encouragement doesn't get anyone to their target grade, clarity does.
Alongside teaching, as well as life coaching, I work as a professional resource writer, magazine editor, and proofreader, so the materials I give students are held to a professional editorial standard.
Once lessons are agreed, every student and parent receives a fully tailored scheme of work, with regular updates on progress throughout.
Do get in touch — I look forward to meeting you.

Qualifications & experience:
I've spent over 25 years teaching English Literature and Language, including as a Head of Department, and examining for OCR, AQA, and currently Cambridge International — so I mark to the same standard I teach to, and I know exactly what separates a student who's close to their target grade from one who's actually there. I work across AQA, OCR, Edexcel, Eduqas, and CAIE.

Who my lessons are for:
GCSE, IGCSE, A Level, and IB — students who need a specific outcome: the grade to move into A Level, the grade to secure a university place, or simply the confidence to walk into an exam feeling fully prepared.

My approach:
I teach to the mark scheme, not around it — every lesson is built on what an examiner is actually rewarding, not generic essay advice. I draw on accelerated learning techniques, and as a qualified life coach, I build in the holistic skills students need to manage workload and exam stress alongside the subject itself. My students also get access to my own bank of resources — writing frames, past paper breakdowns, and revision materials built for their specific exam board.

Lesson length:
Lessons are typically an hour, with 90-minute sessions available for A Level and IB students during exam prep, if required.

What past students and parents say:
One of my IB Literature students, now at Columbia University, put it better than I could:
"I can say without reservations that the discussions she inspired were just as insightful as introductory English courses at Columbia... I could not have earned a 7 in the May 2025 exam without her extensive guidance."
One A Level student went from a B/C in her mocks to an A* in two months:
"Caroline also helped a lot with understanding Shakespeare... Thanks to her I've gone from a B/C in my mock to an A in two months. I owe my success in the exams to her."*
And a parent, on what an examiner's-eye view does for a nervous student before GCSEs:
"As an English teacher and examiner, she was able to provide exactly what our daughter needed. This gave confidence and greatly reduced anxiety."
I offer a free initial session to talk through where a student currently is, what the target grade requires, and how we'll get there.
