About Tom

I have a solid experience in all kinds of classic technical subjects, acquired mainly during two engineering programs (electromechanical industrial option and aerospace civil option) and a doctorate on the thermal behavior of Li-ion batteries for electrically propelled aircraft. I acquired teaching experience as part of my doctorate (for 5 years already), where I provide exercises and labs for subjects related to electricity.

This course is largely inspired by the course I give to industrial engineering students at the VUB. It is offers a complete theoretical basis and practical implementation at the end. This will allow you to fully understand industrial and domestic distribution facilities. The last class goes further than what you we see at the university but it is definitely worth it. All the lessons have a theoretical part and exercises, and last about 5 hours including three breaks of 10 minutes.

The first course (linear elements, DC and AC circuits) aims to introduce the basics of electricity, (capacitors, coils, sources, loads, series, parallel, active and reactive power) also we will look at how we can calculate any AC / DC circuits, using matrices, and complex numbers). Also we take a look at what softwares can help you do this kind of calculation (I assume knowledge of the geometric circle (sin, cos) and basic algebra (transformation of equations)).

The second course introduces three-phase circuits (single-line diagram, star-delta connection, power measurement), and transformers (identification of components of the equivalent diagram, Keps triangle, parallel connection, power limits, harmonic elimination 3, security implications).

The third course introduces earth diagrams, circuit breakers, fuses, cable section calculations. The analysis of an industrial installation and a domestic installation is made. The selectivity and safety of the installations is studied for various operating faults. The fourth course offers an introduction to converters and power electronics. Several non-linear components are introduced (power diode, thyristor, triac, Mosfet, IGBT, BJT). Popular schemes (buck, boost, H-bridge) are introduced. The simulation and analysis of this kind of circuits is introduced with examples.

The fifth course aims to build a power converter. An introduction to electronics, and PCB drawing on circuitMaker will be required. The optimization of the controller is done by the analysis through the simulation program. The controller is then implemented in hardware in an analog or digital way. The properties of the converter are tested and studied.
