About Jeff

I’m Jeff Stelk, an experienced educator with over six years in education, including time as a classroom teacher, substitute, and instructional support across multiple grade levels. Teaching is my fifth career, following work in technology, video production, and software development—backgrounds that shaped how I approach learning: practical, structured, and built for real-world success.

I didn’t take a traditional path into education, and that’s exactly what makes my approach different. I’ve worked with a wide range of students—from those who are frustrated and falling behind to those who simply need the right push to reach the next level. I understand that every student learns differently, and I take pride in meeting them where they are while steadily building their confidence and independence.

My focus has always been on more than just grades. I work to help students develop clarity in their thinking, confidence in their abilities, and ownership over their learning. Writing, in particular, is a skill that carries far beyond the classroom, and I make sure students leave with tools they can actually use.

Students and families can expect professionalism, consistency, and honest communication. I believe in setting clear expectations, celebrating progress, and creating an environment where students feel supported—but also challenged to grow.

My approach to writing instruction is simple: confidence comes first—because students who believe they can write, will write. I don’t just correct papers with red ink; I teach students how to think, organize, and express their ideas clearly so they can succeed independently.

Each lesson is structured but flexible based on the student’s needs. A typical session includes a quick skill warm-up (grammar, sentence structure, or idea generation), followed by guided writing where we actively build or revise a piece together. I model strong writing, provide immediate feedback, and then gradually release responsibility so the student can apply the skill on their own. We finish with a reflection or quick win so progress is visible every session.

I use real strategies that work beyond the classroom—breaking down essays into manageable steps, building strong paragraphs, improving clarity, and developing voice in creative writing. For struggling writers, I simplify the process. For advanced students, I push depth, style, and precision.

What sets me apart is my background. I bring both classroom teaching experience and real-world communication skills, so students aren’t just learning to pass assignments—they’re learning to write with purpose and confidence.

Lessons are designed for upper elementary through middle school students, and can extend into high school for essay writing support. I work with students who are frustrated, stuck, or lacking confidence, as well as those who want to refine and elevate their writing skills.
