About Elena

Hello! I am an English tutor with over 4 years of experience helping more than 200 students develop genuine skill and confidence in English at GCSE, A-Level, and university level. I have always believed that English is one of the most valuable subjects a student can study — not because of its direct career applications, though those are significant, but because developing the ability to read carefully and write precisely is genuinely transformative for every kind of thinking and communication. My curriculum coverage spans literary analysis (prose fiction, poetry, drama, literary non-fiction), language analysis, argument writing, creative writing, and the full range of examination preparation at GCSE and A-Level. I also have experience tutoring students in academic writing at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I cover all major UK exam boards and always align my teaching to each student's specific course requirements. What I bring to every session, beyond subject knowledge, is the ability to give feedback that is genuinely actionable — feedback that tells a student not just that their analysis is underdeveloped but what specifically would make it stronger and how to get there. That precision in feedback is what drives rapid and genuine improvement, and it is what my students consistently identify as the most valuable aspect of our sessions.

About the lesson

My approach to English tutoring starts from a simple observation: most students who struggle with English do not lack intelligence or even verbal ability — they lack a clear model of what good English work actually looks like at the level of craft. They write essays that are vague where they should be specific, that summarize where they should analyze, that assert where they should argue. They read texts without a reliable framework for deciding what to notice and what to make of it. My job is to provide those missing models and frameworks with great clarity and then help students internalize them through practice. I teach analytical reading as a set of specific habits: reading slowly and actively, attending to word choice, sentence structure, and rhetorical pattern, asking what effect a particular choice produces and why a writer might have made it. I practice these habits with students on a wide range of text types — literary prose and poetry, non-fiction argument, persuasive writing — so they become adaptable rather than tied to specific text types or formats. For writing, I teach the essay as an argument with a structure that earns the reader's trust through logical progression and evidential rigor. I teach the paragraph as a unit of reasoning with a clear job to do, not just a collection of related sentences. And I teach the sentence as a tool that can be shaped and controlled for clarity, emphasis, and rhythm. Working at all three levels simultaneously produces writing that is both sophisticated and genuinely readable.
