About Basil

I a 33 year old Englishman living and working in Philadephia. I have been working as a language arts teacher full time for four years and in my spare time, I am a published fiction writer.

When I started secondary school I struggled badly with Maths. It confused me and I hated feeling stupid, so I ignored it. Eventually my parents started looking for a tutor. They booked a young PHD student called Ben.

Ben loved Maths and turned out to be a patient and dedicated tutor. He helped me get to grips with the subject for the first time in my life, doing wonders for my classroom confidence along the way. It was a hugely valuable experience for me, and I aim to give every one of my students that same boost in the subject which I love - English language arts.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring:
I combine an open, conversational approach to learning with a developed understanding of the demands made of students at each level of their language arts education. One to one tuition affords students the space to identify and target problem areas specific to them. Consequently, tailored learning is at the heart of my approach. I get to know each student's learning habits so that we can work effectively towards their study goals.
