About Erik
Before becoming a teacher, I had a background in improvised comedy and script writing. The bottom line is that I love stories and telling them! I'm excited about the Humanities and both my Bachelors and Masters degrees are in the Liberal Arts. My calling is to combine my education, experience, and love of learning and help struggling students excel--or simply improve!
Now, they will tell you that I am challenging and expect the best from my students, but I help them along the way. When I was a student in high school, I really struggled to stay engaged because I was bored and wasn't challenged. When I decided to become a teacher back in 2015, I wanted to take my experience with telling stories in entertaining ways and use it to help struggling students rise to the level they are truly capable of lovingly and patiently. You will have to want to do the work, but if you have the desire to learn and partner with me, you will see the undeniable fruits of your efforts.

History is best learned when approached as a series of stories, not just memorization of names and dates (though, those are important, too!). My traditional classroom students will receive a mix of short lectures from me, developing their skills of note-taking, and short/fun research projects. Because how fun is it to always have to hear the teacher talk all the time? Coming from a classical model of education, you get to take charge of your own learning and be helped along the way with the important skills that will help you remember and recite what you have learned.
Just like reading a fun book where the characters experience certain things due to the decisions they've made, my history class allows you to listen to and read the stories of important people and events, learn why they happened, and how those people and events matter to us today--because they surely do!
In exploring history, we utilize the 5 common topics of thinking: Definition, Relation, Comparison, Circumstance, and Testimony--and you will learn how to use all 5 while having a fun experience doing so.
History isn't boring, so why should learning it be?
