About Jack
I am an experienced university academic with more than a decade of teaching, supervision and research experience across Sociology, Media and Communication, Sport, and related social-science subjects.
I hold a PhD in Sociology and Media and Communications from Loughborough University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. During my academic career, I have worked as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor, teaching students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and supervising dissertations and doctoral research.
My teaching is informed by extensive experience of helping students develop their academic writing, critical thinking, research skills and confidence with complex theoretical material. I have taught and supervised work on subjects including sociology, media and communication, digital media, race and racism, sport, culture, research methods and social theory.
I take a professional, patient and individualised approach to tutoring. Students often need different forms of support: some want help understanding a difficult topic, while others need guidance with essay structure, argument development, academic writing, research methods or dissertation work. I adapt each session accordingly and aim to create an environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions and working through areas they find difficult.
Alongside teaching, I am an active researcher and published author, with books and articles appearing with major academic publishers and in international academic journals. This means that I can also support students who want to develop more advanced skills in academic reading, research, critical analysis and scholarly writing.
Above all, my aim is to help students become more confident and independent in their own work, while providing clear, constructive and academically rigorous guidance.

My approach to tutoring is supportive, structured and adapted to the individual student. I begin by identifying what a student wants to improve, whether that is understanding a difficult concept, preparing for an assessment, developing an essay, strengthening academic writing, or becoming more confident with research and critical analysis. Lessons are then organised around those particular needs rather than following a fixed format.
My teaching places considerable emphasis on discussion and explanation. I aim to make complex ideas accessible while retaining their intellectual depth, using examples and questions to help students understand how concepts work and how they can be applied. For essay and assignment support, I work with students on developing arguments, organising material, engaging critically with academic literature and improving the clarity of their writing. I can also provide guidance on research questions, literature reviews, qualitative research, dissertations and research projects.
A typical lesson lasts 50 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged where students are working on substantial assignments, dissertations or research projects.
I hold a PhD in Sociology and Media and Communications from Loughborough University, alongside a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have more than a decade of university teaching experience and have worked as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor. My experience includes teaching Sociology, Media and Communication, Sport, Research Methods and related areas, as well as supervising undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD research.
Lessons are suitable for students who need support with Sociology, Media and Communication and related social-science subjects. I can work with A-level students as well as undergraduate and postgraduate university students, including those seeking more specialised support with dissertations, academic writing, research methods and independent research.
