About Emma
I have been a Linguistics and English tutor since 2016, when I acquired a college level tutoring position at my university.
I've helped many students to develop college level English skills, whether that was in creating outlines, conducting research, or editing and proofreading essays and papers.
Having a background in Linguistics, I was able to help ESL speakers understand the "why" behind the oftentimes inconsistent rules of the English language, and was able to balance the prescriptive (school taught) way of writing with the student's descriptive (personal way of speaking) voice.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics from Metropolitan State University of Denver. I am currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Linguistics, as well as a Master's Degree in Media Forensics. I am also a published author.
I started informally tutoring my fellow classmates when I was still in high school. I found it incredibly rewarding and, when I entered community college and university, I wanted to continue helping my fellow students. Working with a variety of students allows me to see alternate perspectives, which I fiind incredibly interesting and rewarding.
I worked as an informal tutor during my later high school years, and have been working as a formal tutor for the past three years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics which encourages me to look at the English language from an outside perspective. This allows me to be empathetic to questions/frustrations with the English language, and makes me well suited to explaining the "why" behind rules and exceptions.

A typical session involves a lot of questions pertinent to the topic. What are we looking at? Have you picked your research topic? Where do you feel the most confident in your work? Where do you feel the least confident in your work?
This approach allows me to make the most out of our sessions by tailoring them to your needs. This does not mean that sessions need to be completely focused all of the time, as I have found taking five minute "brain breaks" to be more effective than simply drilling information non-stop.
I have worked with a wide variety of students. In high school, I worked with middle school students through my junior and senior level peers. In community college, I helped my fellow students through an informal, word-of-mouth, type of tutoring, which mainly focused on proofreading.
At Metropolitan State University of Denver, I was incredibly fortunate to be able to work with all manner of students, from Freshmen to Seniors, traditional and non-traditional, native English speakers to ESL speakers, as well as students with learning disabilities.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Any questions that encourage the student to think critically would be welcome. This can be as light as an analysis of strenths and weaknesses. What do I do well? What could I do better? What are my goals (big or small)? How much of a time committment do I think I can make (from one hour a week to an hour every day or more)?

Standard pricing would be $20 per hour. If it is an emergency and you need me to proofread a paper with less than three days' notice, the price will increase to $30 per hour.
The less time I have to review something, the less time I have to pay the utmost attention to it. The price increase will hopefully encourage the avoidance of procrastination.
For proofreading papers and essays, I charge $15 flat rate per paper/essay. If the student would like to work with me while I profread, then the hourly charge will apply without adding on the $15 flate rate. I will proofread your paper as quickly as I can without sacrificing quality of feedback, so please permit me two days at the most in order to proofread your paper/essay, though it is likely I will get back to you sooner.
