About Nick

I'm an experienced and enthusiastic personal tutor currently studying at Columbia University. I have experience tutoring across all subject areas at the K-8 level, where I also work with students to establish long-lasting, effective study and organizational skills. For older students, my specialties include:

• Test Preparation (SAT, ACT, SHSAT, and PSAT)

• Humanities (English Language/Literature, History, Writing/Editing)

• Social Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Government)

• Test Preparation (SAT, ACT, SHSAT, and PSAT)

• College/Private School Admissions (college search, application/essay writing, editing)

I work hard to cater my approach to the particular needs and strengths of each of my clients, and pay attention to established and emerging research in pedagogy and educational psychology in order to provide the most enriching and productive educational aid I possibly can. I believe that a worthwhile education requires a strong and supportive relationship between teacher and student; especially in our initial sessions, I work hard to get to know students and cultivate a warm, positive, and safe relationship where students feel comfortable asking questions, experimenting with new methods, and defining their needs.

As I strive to serve my clients' education in a holistic context, I'm more than happy to coordinate with parents and teachers to ensure that learning extends beyond the length of our individual sessions. I am also experienced and comfortable working with differently-abled and special-needs students.

When done right, pedagogy is tremendously rewarding: there is nothing like the reward of helping a student locate their own strengths and enthusiasm for a subject, of discovering the best approach to a topic and watching it "click" for a learner in real-time. Learning new things is so important precisely because it is so difficult: I'm familiar with the frustrations and negative emotions endemic to wrestling with a subject, and consider it a privelege to help students learn to use their unique strengths and profiles to learn and grow in the best way for them.
