About Sarah

I stand out because I truly care about my students. In my own personal education experience, too many tutors/professors/teachers care simply about the paycheck, and don't want to take the time to ensure each of their students succeeds. I make a point to make sure you not only do well in your classes, but also are prepared for higher classes and real-life applications.

I love working with people! I'm a very social person, and one of my best strengths is being able to connect with people, and explain my ideas in a way that's easy to understand. My favorite part of tutoring is that moment when a student "gets it" - when you can see in their eyes and voice that they understand the concept, and are excited to practice and learn more.

I started tutoring in high school, when my little sisters' friends would come to me for math help. Eventually, that grew into a small source of income, and I started tutoring friends, neighbors, and family friends's kids. Now, I tutor a range of students, from primary school-aged kids to my own college classmates.

I'm currently a college student studying computer science and mathmatics at Georgia Tech. However, most of my tutoring experience is English and Mathematics.

Most recently (pre-COVID-19), I was employed at  a local preschool, and I really enjoyed my time there!

Typically, I like to start with getting to know the student, not necessarily jumping straight into the material. The more I know, even through a simple 2-minute conversation, the more easily I can tailor my lessons towards you! Each person learns differently, and it's so important to establish that at the beginning so I can tutor effectively.

I've worked with most ages, but I typically enjoy working with students in the earlier years of middle school. Despite this, I've worked with high school and elementary school quite a bit as well.

If you're looking for a math or English teacher, look at how they speak. Even though math isn't based on a speaking language, it can really help to find a teacher who can teach at your level, or slightly above so you can learn and grasp the material. No one likes it when the teacher whizzes through material, and having a fast-paced tutor doesn't help.

My favorite teaching memory was actually in the middle of summer, when I and my team were conducting a robotics workshop at our county fair. Kids of all ages were stopping by our booth, and we'd teach them how to build and program their very own robot. All throughout the hot day, kids came and went, but I'll never forget this one little girl. She was quiet when she came up to us, and she hardly spoke a word as she built her robot. When it came to coding though, her whole mood changed. I'll always remember seeing her whole face light up when she ran her code and saw the robot move for the first time. That was the day I decided I wanted to teach. I've always loved seeing it "click" inside a student's mind when they understand a concept they'd struggled with, and that event confirmed my sentiment.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before you come to tutoring, it's always a good idea to have an idea of where you're stuck. It's okay if you have no idea where to start, and oftentimes that's the best place to start teaching. However, try and understand the material to the best of your ability, or at least skim it, before you ask for help. At the same time, don't wait too long! Asking for help is always a good thing.

Typically, I charge anywhere from $20 to $30 per hour for tutoring sessions, depending on the subject and difficulty of material. (For example, higher level math courses would be slightly more expensive, around $35 an hour)
