About Sarah

Hi all! My name is Sarah Ilyas

I’ve been a tutor/mentor for almost 12 years now, and am looking to reach out to parents who wish to find educational and emotional support for their child/ren. A little bit about me:

I'm a graduate of the University of Virginia with a background in Psychology and Education. I'm a fluent Native English speaker with strong communication skills. I've had over 7 years of teaching experience, and years of experience dealing with teenagers who have mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and ADHD.

I've taught and have taken Advanced Placement exams, the SAT, GRE and, I've taught ESL courses to students who speak English as a second language.

I'm a firm believer that with a little bit of encouragement, patience, and a customized learning approach, there’s no such thing as not being “capable” enough!

With a big "HI" and a smile. :) We don't dive right into work. I will want to first address your needs and understand how best I can help you. I'd like to meet both the parent(s) and student(s) before we proceed with our sessions.

I have a Masters in Education Leadership & Management along with a Bachelors in Psychology. I have had formal training as a teacher and have taught for over 10 years professionally. I have also been tutoring since my undergraduate years.

About the lesson

We spend the first session getting to know each other. I'll get to know what my student's goals are, how they wish to go about the sessions, what topics they want to cover, and other important details.

We then have a few warm-up exercises on the topic we will be working on. This just helps me gauge the material I need to prepare for the next session.

I've working with a diverse range of students-- from elementary school to undergraduate in college and adult learners. I've also worked with students who have mental health issues, be it being on the spectrum, ADHD, anxiety or depression.

Don't go for how knowledgeable a teacher can be. Go for how well they can adapt with your learning pace. This requires patience, acceptance and commitment. .

My most recent event that I'm still smiling about is my student texting me that she FINALLY got her first A on her AP practice exam. We've worked hard to move her final grade from a "D" to a "B+"

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) How do I learn BEST? If you can't figure this out yet, it's okay! We can find what suits you best through trial and error

2)What are you ACTUALLY worried about? Your grade? the pressure? not being able to understand the content?

3) I want you to ask about me, and my experience. I want you to be very honest about what type of communication works for you.

I usually consider what my clients can afford before I finalize my rates. However, it also depends on the number of sessions, and amount of work needed. I do not compromise on quality regardless of the pay rate.
