About Piya

Hi, I'm Piya! I graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A. in Communication and a minor in French Language Studies. I am dedicated to improving students' performance, while building confidence and a positive attitude around education!

I have tutored at C2 Education where I was able to work with students one-on-one by cultivating strong studying skills and confidence through personalized instruction and test prep. During my time at C2, I worked with students ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 12. I was able to help them succeed whether they needed more guidance, or whether they were independent learners.

Some of my qualifications as they relate to helping students excel in English coursework:

- I tutored English (school work, ACT, and SAT) at C2 Education

- I majored in Communication at the University of Maryland which included coursework heavily centered on effective writing, public speaking, and reading skills

- I was Managing Editor of my high school newspaper (Northwest High School Jagwire, Germantown, MD)

Given the current global crisis, I feel more motivated than ever to reach out and provide students with the support and instruction they need to succeed. I want to help all students reach their highest potential, and I know each one is unique in the way he or she approaches their coursework. I am happy to offer tutoring via Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype, or whatever other means of communication the student is comfortable with. I also welcome any suggestions or recommendations from students and parents. Feel free to contact me for a consultation or lesson!

After graduating from the University of Maryland, I wanted to explore the possibility of a career as an educator. This led me to my position as a tutor at C2 Education, a leading test prep and education center.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the University of Maryland. Not only did my coursework include rigorous practice of essential acacdemic reading and writing skills, it also put great focus on public speaking and interpersonal communication. These are tools that can help students achieve greater success in college and beyond.

About the lesson

My first step in working with new students is building rapport. Finding common ground can help us work together comfortably and successfully. Then I move on to ask them what subjects they feel strong in, where they need help, and talk about any specific skills or learning areas we can work on.

I have worked with students ranging from kindergarten to high school level. The majority of my experience is with Juniors and Seniors in High School, preparing for the ACT, SAT, and college applications/essays.

In English and language subjects, it's especially important to work with a teacher who has great communication skills. If the teacher is good at explaining skills and concepts, that means he or she has likely excelled in the subjects being taught.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to think of your recent successes and challenges in school. What was a project you were really passionate and excited about? Is there an assignment you got feedback on that you weren't pleased with? Having concrete examples (tests, assignments, projects, papers) will help the teacher understand what areas you excel in, and what areas the both of you can work on together.

I understand education is a priority, and am open to working with each family's individual budget. My starting rate is $25/hour, but am happy to have an open conversation about the student's needs and create a plan that works for everyone.
