About Matt

Close your eyes, and picture yourself sitting in English class. What comes to mind? Are you thinking about that arcane English literature your teacher is having you read? Maybe you're dreading the essay you have to write by tomorrow morning, or the upcoming MCAS, the SATs, or your college admissions packet.

I’d rather you think about stories. Everyone loves a story. Cavemen used to sit around the fire and tell stories, and we’re still doing it today — it’s part of what makes us human. The only difference is that today, we tell our stories differently. We use essays, emails, exams, and resumes to communicate who we are, which means that we must read, write, and digest information using tools which can feel really unnatural or intimidating (at first).

The key thing to realize is that you've already been communicating with human beings for your entire life, and even though the intimidation factor may go up, nothing really changes when you walk into a classroom or job interview. In a few painless tutoring sessions, I can help you find your voice and tell YOUR story, whether you need it to ace your next essay, impress your boss, or finally find that book that you can't put down. It's your world. Let's figure out how you'd like to talk about it.

My mom is a teacher! I grew up watching her work, and I was always blown away by her ability to get her students to understand topics which they had previously found to be frustrating, boring, or outright impenetrable. When I was a kid, I even benefited from her approach as I struggled to get my head around math (historically, my least favorite subject, until she got me to see the light). I started teaching as soon as I was old enough to do so. There is nothing cooler than helping someone realize that they can learn, discover, or contribute to their world in a way that's all their own.

I am currently in my second year of grad school at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (majoring in community social psychology). I am also a full-time research assistant and program evaluator, which basically means that I learn, write, and read for a living (when I’m not tutoring my students!).

In 2021, I received a bachelor's degree in social psychology, graduating summa cum laude from Southern New Hampshire University. I am a fully inducted member of the National Society for Leadership and Success and Psi Chi (the national psychology honors society), and I have received numerous commendations for my undergraduate performance, including appointments to the university's President's List.

I have worked as a private English language and writing tutor since 2018 (with students aged 10-19). I have also volunteered my time as an English tutor in a Massachusetts public school, teaching writing workshops and conducting one-on-one editing and revision sessions. Prior to my scholastic work, I was employed as a guitar teacher, songwriter, and lyricist, and was accepted to the Berklee College of Music for songwriting.

About the lesson

Everyone learns differently, so before diving into our regular learning sessions, I find that it’s helpful to talk with my students about their unique strengths, worries, and learning goals. Then, I’ll put together a strategy which essentially leverages your strengths to address each of your improvement areas using a teaching style which is practical, unintimidating, and fun. I like drawing connections between the things my students love about the world, and their academic “weaknesses” (because, as we'll discuss, your weaknesses are actually "strengths in disguise" -- there are some benefits to having a tutor who's in grad school to be a psychologist!). By the end of our time together, you'll be applying your new skills without realizing it, and you'll realize that you might actually kind of love to learn.

I started out working with students in grades 4-8, but have since expanded my business to include high school, college, and adult learners. While I have been lucky enough to work with students of various personalities and backgrounds, I am particularly proud of my experience working with clients who are shy or uncertain of their abilities.

Think about what you really want to get out of your tutoring sessions. Why, specifically, do you want to get better at reading, writing, or public speaking? What has reduced your confidence in the past?

And a quick thought experiment: If you woke up tomorrow with the ability to use language EXACTLY as you saw fit (which, for some students, might mean “no more writing!”), how would you use it?

It’s okay if you don’t have your answers right now, but you should feel confident that you can have this discussion with your new tutor (or, better yet, they should initiate it with you), so that you can find the answers you need to be the communicator you want to be.

I firmly believe that everyone can find their voice and use language in a way that works for them, but I'm not talking about just learning to love Hemingway or channeling your inner Jane Austen during MCAS season. I'm talking about taking ownership of your communicational superpowers and learning how to wear them extremely well. THAT, anyone can do, and a great tutor will help you to figure out exactly how.

I ran my first ultramarathon last spring! It was an experience I will never forget and, to date, the best reason I have come up with for eating an entire large pizza by myself. To quote the great Jason Molina, "You can live a long time in such a little while."

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I always appreciate it when students take a few minutes to consider not only their immediate academic needs (i.e., why they’re looking to work with a tutor), but also their broader strengths, hobbies, goals, and lived experiences. It’s amazing where learning breakthroughs can come from sometimes.

Try asking yourself questions like…

-What’s a really cool experience, or funny story, that I love telling people about? (Bonus points if you can come to our interview with an answer to this one!)

-What are my favorite subjects in school?

-What are my least favorite subjects in school?

-Do I like reading? What about writing? What do I like/dislike about them?

-If I don’t like reading or writing, was there a time in the past when I did (doesn't have to be school-related)?

-What kind of music do I like (if any)?

-What are my favorite sports (if any)?

-What are some of my hobbies and passions? Am I a foodie? Do I love to travel? Comic books? Hiking?

I typically charge between $40 and $50 per private lesson (45 minutes, via Zoom or Google Meet). However, I am willing to discuss alternative lesson formats, lesson lengths, and pricing options on a case-by-case basis.
