About Adelia

Story Shifter's takes a social-emotional informed approach to tutoring. With a background in literacy development and mental health services, I provide reading, writing, and English intervention to students in grades K-12. With 5+ years of experience in literacy and writing intervention, I have provided early learners with support to improve their understanding of phonics, sentence structure, and reading comprehension as well as supporting advanced learners with more complex skills, such as persuasive essay writing and personal statements for college applications. Story Shifter's is rooted in the belief that everyone should be the author of their own story, and this is carried out by empowering learners to find their voice through English Language Arts.

I enjoy leading young people to find joy in reading and writing as well as to find success in their classes using their developed skill set. Reading and writing impact their engagement in all of their classes and broader communication with the world around them. With this in mind, I strive to help build both a student's skill set and confidence to share their knowledge, ideas, opinions, and experiences.

After graduating from the University of Michigan, I carried out a self-directed service project through the Wallenberg Fellowship in Cape Town, South Africa. I partnered with a local non-profit and two primary schools to provide in-school and extracurricular reading programming. This included teaching library class lessons, hosting after-school reading clubs, developing a school-wide spelling bee competition, leading a language arts-focused field trip, and a week-long girls' empowerment camp.

Upon returning to my hometown after my fellowship year, I found Story Shifters to provide young people with culturally-relevant literacy programming to improve their school performance and self-esteem. Programming included in-school intervention, after-school tutoring, a mentorship program for teen girls, and various storytelling workshops. I have helped students in a variety of areas, including reading comprehension, phonics, and college essays.

It is important for me to gain an understanding of the child and the adult's desired areas of growth and support as well as to determine the child's strengths and preferences. My goal is to address and support the identified needs and find ways to help the learner find joy and confidence in using their voice through reading and writing.

I have worked with a broad range of students testing at, below, and above grade level in reading and writing. Additionally, some of my previous students have had IEPs and/or behavioral challenges that impacted their performance. My response to each learner is to meet them where they are with compassion.
