About Jennifer
Hello! I'm happy you're interested in strengthening your skills. I'm a professional writer, copy editor, narrator and content creator who enjoys tutoring. I have worked with the YMCA as an online tutor in science, English/language arts, and study skills. I spent the past seven years managing a music school. I'm also an avid cook, singer, and visual artist, so there's always something to talk about. :)
(concealed information)
I love empowering my students with new skills. Nothing makes me happier than watching fear, misery, or boredom turn into confidence.
I started tutoring as a teenager. I have been involved with educational institutions most of my career, primarily as an administrator, but often as an informal mentor, teacher, and tutor.
I have a bachelor's degree in German language, and I minored in chemistry, so my knowledge base spans both"left- and right-brained" subject areas. I've spent many years of my career writing, editing, and producing multimedia content professionally. I am also the mother of two sons (now in their 20s). One of them is dyslexic; I spent years advocating for him in the school system and learned a great deal about how to help atypical young people navigate their way through school.
I am currently an online tutor with the YMCA and take great joy in the work.

I like to learn about the student by digging right in. We usually begin by looking together at a current assignment or learning goal they have. I observe and guide them as they approach their work. Working side-by-side like this helps establish a friendly rapport and to build trust, all the while giving me an opportunity to assess the student's skill level, learning style, and personality traits.
I have worked primarily with middle and high school students, but enjoy working with younger students as well.
Approach it with a positive attitude. Imagine that you're going to enjoy working with your tutor and that what was once difficult and lonely might soon feel doable, and even fun. Look for a tutor who not only knows the subject but who cares about you as a person, and who enjoys teaching.
I saved a stray cat's life. He had been in a fight and his tail was infected. The infection was spreading and he was beginning to show signs of sepsis. He was going to die if no one helped him. I could not capture him to take him to the vet. He was too crafty, even for a "have a heart" trap. It was so distressing to watch him getting sicker and sicker, so I used my background in chemistry to measure and feed him the right amount of ampicillin (the antibiotic a vet would have given him) mixed in mayonnaise for five days. Now he is well again!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- What is it that you'd like to learn to do better?
- What has made it hard for you to do this?
- If you could change one thing about how this subject is taught, what would it be?
