About Erica

Hello! My name is Erica and I tutor children and adults of all ages, specializing in reading and writing. My sessions are tailored to each client, and I do my best to help each and every one succeed. I have twenty years of tutoring experience with all ages and abilities, and I truly love the work. I graduated with my BA from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Before tutoring, I was a professional journalist and writer for national news publications.

My specific tutor experience includes helping elementary-age children with phonics, reading, writing and math. I have also tutored Oakland Community College students with writing and grammar.

After tutoring my own eldest son, who struggles in class due to ADHD and anxiety, he jumped multiple grade levels in reading. In third grade he was over a year behind, and by fifth, he is now a year ahead, and no longer gets resource room help in that subject.

My hobbies include DIY home improvements, cooking, and having fun with my family.

I love to see my students build their self-confidence as they learn and master their academic goals. Each person learns differently, and I love helping them clarify not just the material at hand, but how they best learn information in general. Knowledge is power and I celebrate their success together with them!

About the lesson

The first step is scheduling a free introductory ten minute call with me. During that call, I would like to know more what prompted this tutor request, specifics on you or your child's academic and school situation, and your goals. You can ask me any questions you would like. At that point comes the second step; we can set up our first session. We will go over payment options at that time.

At that first session, I will meet you or your child and assess my starting point and any holes in knowledge to address. Examining current work is helpful, and if desired, I am happy to call a teacher and provide my email to them. Working a child, I will also use that first session to calm their fears, establish trust, and incorporate motivating and fun activities into each session.

After the first session I am establishing that student's individual curriculum with me, which I share with their parent (and/or them, if desired). I make changes as needed if students need more or less repetition, or a different approach to the material.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves their personal goal for hiring a tutor, such as performing at grade level in reading, or filling holes in their knowledge of basic grammar. This way they can communicate that to the tutor. Ask the tutor specifically how he or she would help the student achieve that goal, and how long it will take to achieve, approximately. Finally, make sure you like the person tutoring you. You want to look forward to sessions and find them both trustworthy and nice.

Excellent! We have been working with Erica for two months now, and it has been great to have such open communication with her regarding my son. She really seems to care about the results, as it shows in the passion she exhibits for teaching and my son’s learning style. She has been intuitive in many ways, my son can’t wait until Tuesday comes around as his confidence in spelling is growing every week. We are very excited for ultimate results in this upcoming 3rd grade school year for us. Another review to follow when there are updated results of what the 3rd grade brings, as we started with tutoring so late in the school year. I plan to have Erica tutor my son for as long as it takes to be an expert speller/storyteller/writer at his grade level! I’m sure we’ll end with 5+ stars :-)
