About Matthew
Hi! My name is Matt Sorrels, and I am a former high school math teacher. I especially like Algebra and Calculus, but am open to all math content. I hold a bachelor's in music (vocal performance) and economics from Emory University in Atlanta. I also am happy to teach music theory at any level, as well as elementary-middle school ELA and up to Spanish 3.
I love helping students find their "aha!" moments. Especially in math, finally grasping a concept after a healthy amount of productive struggle helps students gain confidence, leading to more mastery in the long-run.
I took on an internship during college working for an after-school program that teaches leadership development skills to Title 1 high schoolers. The 3 founders of the program were all former teachers, and they inspired me to go into education, especially in Title 1 environments.
I have two years of experience teaching high school math through Teach for America.

I would definitely want to build a rapport through a conversation to get to know my student as a person before diving into the content. Having an idea of my students' personalities, interests, and mindsets will allow me to create more individualized learning plans.
I spent both years of my experience teaching general and special ed students in a co-taught environment at a Title 1 school. I also have a bit of experience substitute teaching at Title 1 charter schools.
