About Peter

When choosing a tutor, most students and parents are primarily interested in:

1) Academic strength:

- I hold both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Mathematics

2) A tutor with the skill and adeptness to quickly put students at ease, resulting in effective learning almost immediately:

- I have decades of experience teaching and tutoring students at the high school, college, and older adult levels, as well as effectively teaching to a student’s individual learning needs.

- I ask students questions frequently to build their confidence and give them a feeling of engagement.

upon completion of Graduate School at the U of North Carolina, I started teaching at a public High School in the Boston area. For years, I knew I wanted to be a classroom teacher.

About the lesson

Always have a courteous and respectful manner. Quickly gauge the student's comfort level with the current subject material. During the tutoring, ask plenty of questions (even easy ones, if needed) to get the student engaged. Also give compliments whenever available to build confidence.

- Students of very high intelligence (e.g. Advanced Placement Calculus in high school), students with very low math skills, and students of every knowledge level in between

- students with learning disabilities

- polite, pleasant, and respectful manner

- degree(s) in mathematics

- excellent communication skills

- 5-10 years experience teaching/tutoring math

- the ability to explain concepts clearly. Choosing the right steps and pacing, and sensing when the student understands or does not understand. Breaking a step into micro-steps if necessary.

Recently, I "instant-tutored" a woman taking college algebra after being out of school for a few years. After the session, she expressed the desire to continue our tutoring sessions.

Shortly thereafter, her husband asked for help with pre-calculus.

By the time we finished, I had tutored about ten 1.5 hour sessions. They were genuinely pleased, and very complimentary. Having both adults succeed was very satisfying for me.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- do I prefer a man or woman tutor?

- age of the tutor?

- ability to speak clearly

- is there certain subject matter or types of concepts/problems with which I always have difficulty?

- when I ask tutors why they do tutoring, what answers am I looking for?
