About Emma
As a Human Development graduate from Cornell University, I have the tools to not only teach a variety of subjects, but apply them effectively as well. I understand the best way to motivate students and have practice individualizing my teaching style according to students' needs. Tutoring isn't about just knowing the material. My academic success combined with my background in educational psychology make me an ideal candidate for a wide variety of subjects.
The most rewarding part of teaching is watching a student really understand a concept for the first time. A lot of times this just takes explaining it from a new perspective. I love the challenge of finding the right approach for each student.
I have always had a passion for teaching. My first experience was as Geometry tutor the summers after my sophomore and freshman year of high school. During college I also took a variety of classes in the education department and tutored friends in classes I was taking. I am currently working as a substitute teacher and tutor.
With a B.S. in Human Development, I know how to effectively motivate students, work around work-related anxiety, and adjust my approach depending on the age of the student. I also took several classes in Education. These included Educational Psychology, The Art of Teaching, and two youth-leadership based courses. Not only do I have the theoretical background, but I've been tutoring students since high school and have been working as a substitute teacher for the past year.

Once I have the material, I like to start by working with the students to understand their goals and learning style. I'll then form a tutoring plan and ensure that measurable objectives are being met with each meeting. My approach varies depending on the needs of the student. Some need more help with content and others are looking for help staying motivated. I make sure that I am communicating well with the student in order to establish the most effective approach.
I have worked with students of all ages and from all backgrounds. While the majority of my work is with students in middle school and up, I enjoy working with elementary schoolers as well. I also like to take on jobs with students who are having trouble motivating themselves. My approach is multidimensional, so I'm working to make sure that their study habits are sustainable as well.
Make sure that you're hiring someone who isn't afraid to re-learn the material. This doesn't mean hire someone that has forgotten the material, but rather someone who understands that teaching is about knowing the learning process. It's important to think about what helped the most when they were learning the matterial and alternate ways to approach the same problem. Someone overly confident in their knowledge risks isolating the student by assuming a greater level of background knowledge.
