About Tom

I’m Tom Smith, a passionate educator with 15 years of teaching experience across Australia, the UK, Germany, Czech Republic, and Peru. At 39, I've had the privilege of teaching a wide range of students—from primary school to high school—in subjects including Maths, English, ICT, and more. My international background and hands-on approach have shaped me into a teacher who values creativity, empathy, and positive reinforcement.

I am a fully qualified Dietitian currently working part-time in the health industry, and I continue to work casually a couple of days a week as a teacher. Now transitioning into tutoring, I’m committed to offering personalised, results-driven lessons that build confidence and academic resilience. I strive to create engaging, interactive learning experiences tailored to each student's unique needs.

Outside the classroom, I enjoy playing guitar, engaging in sports, and exploring new cultures—experiences that enrich my teaching and help me connect with students from all walks of life. I look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals and inspiring a lifelong love of learning.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is centred on encouragement, motivation, and building resilience to help students excel in Mathematics. In our initial session, we’ll collaborate with your parents to set clear, personalised goals. I will liaise with your child's teacher through parental coordination—following Queensland guidelines—to obtain the current curriculum, ensuring our lessons are tailored to support students in catching up or extending their Maths skills. Lessons are typically one hour long, with each session carefully customised to reinforce core mathematical concepts, enhance problem-solving abilities, and build confidence in tackling challenging Maths tasks.

Details

Primary school lessons are $50 per hour, and secondary school lessons are $70 per hour. These rates reflect the high quality of lesson preparation, planning, and teaching. Lessons are typically conducted at my home in Albion. However, I am happy to travel within a 20km radius.
• Lessons within walking distance incur no extra fee.
• Travel within 0–10km adds $15.
• Travel between 10–20km adds $30 to cover fuel, time, and other vehicle-related expenses.
