Hello! I am Ms. Megan. I have my Master's degree in Special Education from Wilmington University. My certifications include: special education (K-12), early childhood (birth-2nd grade), elementary education (K-6th), teaching English language learners, Autism and severe intellectual disabilities. I have been teaching for 10 years and tutoring for 3 years. I am trained in the science of reading and use a systematic approach to helping students decode, encode (spell), and write. I use lots of visuals and my lessons are very engaging.

**Individualized ELA Teaching Strategies**
I provide **explicit, structured, and multisensory English Language Arts instruction
** aligned with the Science of Reading to support students with Autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, low working memory, and slow processing speeds. Instruction is designed to build foundational literacy skills through **systematic phonics**, **targeted language development**, and **repeated, supported practice**.
**1. Structured Literacy Approach**
* **Systematic and sequential phonics instruction:** I teach phonological and phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, blending, segmenting, and decoding using a clear progression from simple to complex.
* **Multisensory teaching methods:** Students engage in visual (letter cards, picture cues), auditory (sound repetition, chants), and kinesthetic/tactile (tracing, tapping, magnetic letters) activities to strengthen sound-symbol connections.
* **Repetition and overlearning:** Key concepts are revisited frequently to ensure mastery and retention, accommodating slow processing and memory challenges.
**2. Scaffolding and Explicit Instruction**
* **Direct modeling with guided practice:** I use “I do, we do, you do” instruction to build confidence and independence.
* **Chunking information:** Lessons are broken into small, manageable steps to reduce cognitive load and support students with low working memory.
* **Clear, concise language:** Directions and questions are simplified and paired with visual supports.
**3. Individualized Supports and Accommodations**
* **Visual schedules and graphic organizers** to support task initiation, comprehension, and transitions.
* **Sentence stems, word banks, and spelling support** to increase access to reading and writing tasks.
* **AAC devices, core boards, and visual choice supports** are integrated into literacy instruction for students with limited verbal communication.
**4. Comprehension and Vocabulary Development**
* **Explicit vocabulary instruction:** Words are introduced with real-life pictures, objects, and repeated contextual use.
* **Interactive read-alouds and shared reading:** Texts are read with intentional modeling of fluent reading, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies (e.g., think-alouds, picture walks, WH-question prompts).
* **Errorless learning and structured prompting** to support comprehension and reduce frustration.
**5. Engagement and Regulation Supports**
* **High-interest, age-appropriate materials** aligned with students’ interests (e.g., animals, familiar characters) to maintain attention and motivation.
* **Embedded movement breaks, sensory supports, and predictable routines** to support attention and self-regulation.
* **Positive behavior supports** and reinforcement systems to encourage participation and persistence with challenging tasks.
**6. Progress Monitoring and Differentiation**
* **Frequent formative assessments** (e.g., decoding checks, running records, sight word fluency) guide pacing and instruction.
* **Flexible grouping** allows for targeted intervention at each student’s instructional level.
* **Individualized pacing and repetition** ensure mastery before moving to new skills.
**Instructional Frameworks and Evidence-Based Practices Integrated:**
* Orton-Gillingham–inspired structured literacy
* Science of Reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension)
* Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI)
* Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) approaches
* Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
