About John

John began teaching ESL in General English, ESP, and Test Preparation in the 1990s, with the qualifications of B.A. (hons), M.A. qual, and Cert TESOL, and from the early 2000s became an IELTS examiner and has taught at Westminster University, London, Birmingham City University, U.K., as well as Adelaide University, Australia and University of South Australia. He was the manager as well as lecturer of the English Language Services department at Binus International University in Jakarta, Indonesia. He has not only managed and designed syllabi but also taught Academic English as well as Test Preparation in IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, SAT, and GMAT, the latter at the London MBA school. Now in Brisbane, Australia he is happy to teach all of these subjects at any level, either in person or online to individuals or groups. John's teaching is informed by many years experience at every level from beginner to the highest level (PhD candidates) and is therefore excellent with great results, one of the most recent being a student who gained 8.5 in IELTS, thereby making his long-held dream a reality. John does everything to ensure you can trust your future with him.

Kim is a wonderful student who knows how to apply herself to study. Her English is generally excellent, especially in terms of written grammar and vocabulary, since she has been working in an English-speaking environment for quite a while and has benefitted from that enormously. Her main issue is with speaking which needs further practice as it is influenced by usual Thai issues, especially the lack of ending words clearly. Overall, a great student and a lovely person.

Perfect! John’s the best tutor! I’ve managed to get my required IELTS score of 7 in writing even with just three sessions with him. He’s very thorough and gives you constructive feedback to improve your work further. And you would feel at ease doing lessons with him as you’d feel that he is genuine in helping you pass the test! It’s real bonus that he’s an ex IELTS examiner as he tries to navigate the lessons around his prior experiences in the field without adding too much pressure at your end. Really glad I did connect with John. :)

Perfect! John is one of the most enthusiastic and conscientious teachers I have ever met. He is knowledgable about IELTS and tells you ways to achieve your desire band score. He also provided many effective learning materials as well as sources ( websites, documentaries,…). He always encouraged me to ask any questions so that I can totally understand the lesson. John is an experienced IELTS teacher with extensive knowledge of all four IELTS skills. He knows how to teach them effectively, and his lessons were always focused, efficient, and made excellent use of time. His experience as a former IELTS Speaking Examiner made his speaking classes especially valuable, offering insights and feedback that felt authentic and highly relevant to the real test.

He is professional, responsible, and hardworking, but also has a great sense of humour and a warm personality that makes learning enjoyable. His support helped me stay motivated and approach challenges with confidence.

During an important stage in my studies, John helped me maintain and strengthen my English skills while keeping me motivated throughout the process. I later went on to complete a Master’s degree at The University of Queensland, and I will always be grateful for his support and encouragement along the way.

To anyone looking for an English teacher, especially an IELTS tutor, I wholeheartedly recommend John. He is not only an outstanding teacher but also a genuinely wonderful person. I feel fortunate to have learned from him, and I hope others have the opportunity to do the same.

Thank you, John, for all of your support.
