About Thomas
Holding a PhD in English with a designated emphasis in Critical Theory from the University of California, Davis, I am a full-time Lecturer of English at Longwood University.
I am also an active scholar of 20th century American literature, regularly publishing in peer-reviewed journals of literary theory and cultural analysis. Two of my articles are attached to this application as evidence of my expertise.
Alongside my work as a lecturer at Longwood University, I am the co-organizer of Literature as Monument, a semi-annual student symposium that celebrates the power of literature and writing to memorialize historical experience. This work informs my approach to mentoring. One of my side projects is called College Writing Mentors, a program collectively run by university instructors who teach at such institutions as Duke, UNC Chappell Hill, the University of Washington, and UC Davis. We recently formed a partnership with UC Berkeley’s East Asian Languages and Culture Department to work one-on-one with their graduate students.

High school students and undergraduates are my usual clients.
As a full-time professor at a regional liberal arts college in Central Virginia, my teaching style is guided always by the need to relate the abstract questions and theoretical concerns explored by the humanities to the immediate lives of my students. I draw from popular culture, historical and current events, science, and film to engage students in conversations that stem from their own experiences of the world, both at school and beyond. Making use of my background in film and video production, I work with elements of American popular culture—such as advertising, cinema, and music—to tease out and highlight my students’ own sense of expertise and idea-ownership regarding the world around them, and I encourage them to write from these perspectives, to cultivate and communicate arguments in which they are personally invested.
