About Bruce
I'm a UCC genetics graduate with an Oxford MSc, and I work in a lab for a living. I've tutored chemistry since 2018.
I have a BSc Genetics (UCC) and MSc Clinical Embryology (Oxford). Applications Scientist at Syndex Bio working on methylation conversion chemistry, previously at Oxford Nanopore developing lab protocols. Earlier lab work meant daily LCMS, pH and density testing to manufacturing standards. Eight years tutoring, plus GMP certification. Also I achieved a H1 in my own Leaving cert Chemistry exam.

Most students who struggle with Leaving Cert Chemistry are stuck on one of two things: moles or organic mechanisms. I find out which early and fix it properly instead of working around it.
The other blocker is math. Hesitate over rearranging an equation and you'll lose marks on volumetric analysis however well you understand the chemistry. I tutor math too, so we deal with that in the lesson rather than calling it a chemistry gap.
I teach from exam questions. We work one together, then the student works the next while I watch and say nothing, which is where the real misunderstanding shows up. Mandatory experiments get drilled separately, because they're predictable marks and get left too late.
For the Chemistry in Practice Investigation, worth 40% of the Leaving Cert, I can help with experimental design, data handling and the report.
Lesson length
One hour weekly. Ninety minutes for sixth years near the exams or working on the investigation.
