About Michael
Hi! My name is Michael Sullivan, but I'm typically referred to by my students as Mr. Mike, Mr. Sullivan, or just Mike. Born and raised in New Jersey, I moved out to Los Angeles to study at USC's prestigious film school, where I studied Writing for Screen and Television. I have an incredible passion for the written word and narratives in whatever form they may take, from classical art and literature to video games and film. That passion is the reason I am the person I am today, and I use teaching as a way to share and encourage that passion in others. As someone who had their own educational struggles growing up with undiagnosed ADHD, I know how much of a struggle asking for help can be. As a tutor, I aim to nurture and encourage, to build up rather than tear down. One of the key takeaways from my time at USC was this: "Screenwriting is Rewriting". Nothing is ever going to be perfect the first time. Mistakes are a part of the process, a part of life, and it's through learning and building off of them that we find what we need to truly thrive as learners.

As a teacher, I am a firm believer in forming an educational partnership between teacher and student. As I learn and get to know my students, I am able to tailor lesson plans specifically to them and their educational needs. A typical lesson could range from a lecture on Screenplay structure and character development and analysis. It can also be a more focused tutoring session where my student and I go through their essays, written material, homework etc. I am a firm believer in the Socratic method of teaching, as the process of learning anything worthwhile is never easy. Ultimately, the student needs to find their way to the answer on their own, but not without guidance and direction. I am willing and able to teach all students K-12, as well as college students interested in working on improving their writing.
