About Frances
I've taught alternative college for 15 years -- inner city students, electricians, returning veterans, and international students. Their proficiencies were those of the range of high school students. Many of them have said I was the best teacher they ever had and I think this is because of my sense of humor and because I tailor lessons to their interests and writing levels.

I believe English should be fun and I'm a good-humored teacher who also believes proper English is the key to success in adulthood. A typical creative writing class would begin with understanding the genre you desire to write in:
Lesson One - for grades 8 - 12:
• What does the student want to write?
• What books or authors have stimulated the student to aspire to this? If s/he don’t have a role model, suggest some to them.
• Give the student a brief, impossible-to-fail exercise in the genre of writing s/he is interested in.*
• The simplest way to begin writing creatively, is to learn to write well. Set up a blog with the student and ask them to find a photograph for the banner. Assign three blog entries for the first week, one of them explaining her/his reason for naming the blog, choosing the image, and her/his ambitions for writing. The remaining two blogs can be about anything.
• Discuss what those blogs might be about and how to write them with tone, description, concrete examples, similes and metaphors, and specificity. Define these terms.
• Assignment: character study of protagonist, or make a list of 25 favorite words if student wants to write poems.
*These exercises will be tailored for genre: Fill in the blank poems; a description of what the protagonist looks like for the genres of literary fiction, romance, mystery; the initial landscape for fantasy/science fiction.
