About Mary
I am a university lecturer from the University of Edinburgh with 30 years of experience of teaching English and Philosophy to young people in schools. I spend time in Perth, WA working with various projects of ‘Youth at Risk’ and with the University of Western Australia. I am a writer and examiner for national qualifications and I also serve as a judge for the Australasian Ethics Olympiad online competitions. I am passionate about language as a source of empowerment for young people and believe that the lives of young people can be transformed by developing insightful communication skills.

With 30 years of experience as a Principal Teacher of English, I have successfully taught and tutored a wide range of learners to appreciate the power that language and literature has to transform lives and open up opportunities for self expression and criticality. I engage young people with a wide range of literary, media and historical texts to develop empathy, knowledge and skills that prepare them to read the world they inhabit with insight and excitement!
