About Arlo
Having completed my MA in the History of Art at The Courtauld in 2024, I've been working in a Mayfair gallery and preparing my PhD thesis on late-Renaissance Venetian art. At The Courtauld I achieved a high Distinction and have not stopped researching since then, with many evenings spent ensconced in the Warburg Institute library.
Before my career in art history formally began, I completed a degree in Photography (in which I gained a First) and for a period became a practising artist myself. My passion for Art History (which pushed me to become an artist) only grew during this period, and while I worked in the fashion industry following my BA, a pursuit of art history felt inevitable.
While my MA specialised in the Italian Renaissance, my career so far has meandered across many movements of art history, and my current position at Huxley-Parlour Gallery means that I never stop learning and developing my knowledge of a myriad of artistic genres and periods.
I am fluent in English (native), Italian, and Spanish, all of which feed into my research practice greatly. I have extensive experience in reading primary and secondary source texts in all of the above languages.

With a particular focus on the Renaissance, Impressionism, and Twentieth Century Modern Art, I'm available to teach all levels. Lessons will be tailored to suit the needs and experience of a student with a focus either on accessibility or on detailed academic analysis.
I have tutored A level students and delivered talks on the topic of Italian Renaissance art at The Courtauld and on Mod-Brit painting and sculpture while working at Huxley-Parlour Gallery. That being said, I'm always keen to build on this experience in dialogue with a student.
Methodologies will be modified to fit specific needs, but a focus on academic art history will be prioritised. I have extensive experience in historical analysis, having written essays on the intersection between culture and geopolitics in Renaissance Venice. As well as this, detailed object-based study is also an important part of my research practice. Languages are also an essential element in art historical research, and something I would intend to implement into lessons.

My school did not offer A-Level Art History and since that's what I wanted to study at uni, I needed Arlo's help. He is an absolutely brilliant tutor, with a very personalised approach - he understands the ins and outs of the Oxbridge application process and was an excellent mentor during the interview prep. An added bonus is that he seems to genuinely love what he does, which left me more confident in my ability and motivated to pursue my passion for art!
Would absolutely recommend Arlo to anyone looking for a friendly, reliable, and knowledgeable tutor in Art History!
I wanted to visit London and see some examples of Renaissance art. It’s not something that I had a great interest in and very little knowledge of but did feel as though I should at least find out why others are so taken with it. So as not to waste my time and dull the experience I asked Arlo for help and advice. He suggested that I visit the Courtauld Gallery in London and selected a few paintings to consider. I was lucky enough to have been accompanied by him on this occasion and I’m very glad that I was. His knowledge and enthusiasm around Renaissance art is amazing, he was able to furnish me with more answers than I had thought I had questions for and would never had thought to ask. From technical techniques of the artist through to his knowledge of and theories about the possible motivations of the artist, clients, audiences and the then world within which the art was being produced, it’s intended meaning at that time, how that meaning may have changed over time, what we know about the art, what we don’t know but can theorise about it. I genuinely did not know that I could take as much away from the experience as I did and will forever be grateful for it.
Less of a lecture in my case and more of a conversation from a very amiable and friendly teacher/guide who genuinely loves his subject and can communicate that knowledge and enthusiasm with ease. A great teacher and communicator.
Highly recommended.
Learning with Arlo has been a wonderful experience for me. Having known next to nothing about Art History, Arlo was a patient, confident, and extremely knowledgable teacher. Lessons were always fun - I felt my knowledge and interest in the subject growing from our first meeting. Highly recommend!
I am a family member of Arlo’s. I’m very familiar with Arlo’s work both academic and professional. He’s exceptionally well-read with a passion for western art history of all periods but with a focus on the Renaissance. He’s attained the highest standards in all his academic and employed work, which is always great quality. He has an in-depth understanding of his subject area which he can communicate articulately and patiently with a wide range of audiences, from beginner to expert.
Arlo has guided me around art gallery collections on many occasions, and as an art history novice I can say that I learned a great deal and was really inspired by Arlo’s innovative insight.
I can truly say that Arlo’s friendly, approachable and engaging approach to sharing his expertise and insight coupled with his outstanding depth of knowledge would be very beneficial to anyone wanting to learn more about art history, particularly the Renaissance.
Arlo is a great Art History tutor ! He makes learning fun and accessible and approaches lessons with a supportive and patient mindset. He has a super impressive depth of knowledge and lessons are genuinely tailored to your needs, while also allowing time for discussion, curiosity and critical thinking. I can’t recommend Arlo highly enough !
