About Harry
If you are reading this, you likely have a student who is capable of more than his present results show, and you want someone who can close that gap without breaking his confidence in the process. That is precisely the work I do. I take students who are struggling, plateaued, or simply underserved by instruction that moves too fast, and I bring them to the point where they can read a hard text, build an argument, and write it down clearly on their own, because that is the ability that raises grades and scores and does not fade once the lesson ends.
I can do this reliably because I have spent years teaching one person at a time and I know that no two students fail for the same reason. Before I promise progress I find out exactly where a particular student's understanding breaks, and I build from there rather than from a generic script. My students do not sit and listen; they work, they are corrected in real time, and they leave each lesson able to do something they could not do when they arrived. Progress of that kind is visible within the first few sessions, and it compounds.
You can expect complete reliability and complete honesty from me. I am an honors scholar of philosophy at the Catholic University of America, trained in the close analysis of difficult texts and in how the mind actually learns, and I hold myself to a plain standard: I take only the students I am confident I can help, in reading, writing, logic, the analytical essay, and verbal and written test preparation, and I tell any family the truth about what I can deliver. Those I take can count on rigor, patience, and steady, demonstrable improvement, lesson after lesson.

I begin from an old and unfashionable premise: that the student already possesses more than he suspects, and that my office is not to furnish a mind but to summon one. So I teach as Socrates did, by interrogation rather than declamation. I set before the student a difficult text or a stubborn problem and I ask him what he makes of it, and then I ask him why, and then I ask him why again, until the borrowed opinion falls away and what remains is either genuine understanding or the honest recognition of its absence. Both are victories, for a man who knows the boundary of his knowledge has already begun to extend it.
I hold that reading, writing, and reasoning are one act seen from three angles: the grasping of another mind's argument and the answering of it in prose of one's own. I model that act once, watch the student attempt it under correction, and then require him to perform it alone, so that he leaves not with my answer transcribed but with his own, arrived at by his own powers and therefore his to keep. That is the whole of it. I do not simplify what is difficult; I make the student equal to the difficulty.
