About Maysie

As a creative thinker, an activist, and an academic, I aim to support experimentation and social engagement for young people. I aim to motivate students who may feel like they don't fit in traditional learning spaces and uplift confidence with career counseling and tutoring. In addition to tutoring writing, reading comprehension, and humanities fields, I have mentored many young people who are curious and concerned, helping them find a field of inquiry in school or a field that aligns with their passion. I foreground each student's unique interests and learning style and support them in finding a path that works for them, rather than pushing people to fit a mold where they don't fit.

My teaching methods are tutorial-focused, emphasizing self-motivated questioning and critical thinking. By introducing specific subjects, I draw out larger questions. This is the starting point for a lesson in the humanities, history, philosophy, and politics. I engage with canonical texts and put them in dialogue with contemporary writing to explore methodology and the history of ideas. Upon reading a text, I first ask how the writer's approach can inform methodology, allowing ideas to thread together and also become applicable to the student's particular interests. This inspires self-motivation and discovery. I assign reading responses and develop essay prompts that prepare students for high-level analysis in literature, political theory, and policy. I provide feedback to students and workshop their writing very closely, encouraging self-directed editing. My lessons are applicable for students interested in pursuing graduate school, and also to those interested in working in policy and nonprofits. This is inclusive of high school and college students. As a tutor, I encourage creativity and innovative thinking. I have first-hand experience in and outside of academic and policy spheres, and I am capable of cultivating skills for students to flourish in these spaces.

Example lesson plan:
1. Read text 1: learn annotation, summarization, and citations to improve reading comprehension and research skills.
2. Read text 2: How does this text relate to the previous? Do you have questions about the writers' perspectives? What might you learn from these writers, if you wrote an essay on something you find interesting?

3. Repeat as needed

4. Writing assignment: walk students through the steps of outlining, finding quotes, creating thesis statements, citing sources, word and grammar choice, and overall essay format.

5. Editing: I will edit the writing piece with question-focused contributions.

My career counseling approach similarly focuses on each student's passion. I motivate individuals to feel confident as they learn skills from networking, to cover letter and application writing. I have proven to support young people in advocating for themselves with writing skills and interview confidence. My mentorship has led to multiple acceptances from competitive colleges, graduate schools, and jobs.

Application/cover letter lesson plans include specific support in rhetorical strategies to demonstrate the capacity to be a competitive candidate for any position.
