About Douglas

With a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences from St. John’s College and two years of teaching experience, I bring a strong academic foundation and a genuine love for education to the table. Having developed and implemented 2 comprehensive Science curricula, taught over 200 middle-school students, and guided them in critical thinking and effective communication, I am well-equipped to assist students in mastering complex subjects. My expertise in classical literature, writing, and thesis preparation, combined with a decade-long immersion in the Great Books tradition, allows me to inspire students to engage deeply with texts and develop their analytical and writing skills. Whether we’re crafting essays, analyzing literary masterpieces, or preparing for a thesis, my goal is to inspire a love of learning (because education is powerful and freeing) and help each student to achieve their academic potential with confidence and enthusiasm.

As a tutor, I prioritize creating a personalized and supportive learning environment tailored to each student's unique needs and goals. My teaching method combines patience, active listening, and structured guidance, encouraging students to think critically and approach challenges with confidence. I use the Socratic method to ask thoughtful, open-ended questions, helping students arrive at answers independently which helps with retention of material.

In Science I emphasize understanding over rote memorization, focusing on connecting concepts to real-world applications. I bring abstract concepts to life through hands-on examples and interactive explanations and sometimes labs. In writing, I guide students through brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and refining their work, ensuring their writer's voice shines through while still holding them to high academic standards through editing techniques. For literature, I encourage close reading and 1 on 1 discussion to uncover deeper meanings and foster a love for reading and storytelling.

What distinguishes me as a tutor is my ability to blend academic rigor with a genuine love for helping students succeed. Drawing from my background in the Great Books tradition, I inspire students to think deeply, ask questions, and make meaningful connections across disciplines, which in my opinion is the truest form of education. My dual expertise in science and the humanities allows me to approach teaching holistically. My experience working in an Admissions Office provides me with a detailed understanding of what colleges are looking for and helps me serve students seeking college prep help.

I offer tutoring for middle and high school students as well as college prep. I am ideal for students preparing essays or lab reports; tackling challenging classical literature; or needing support in subjects like Science, Philosophy, or analysing literature. Whether students are honing their writing skills, mastering critical analysis, or striving to meet academic milestones, my goal is to empower them as an individual.
