About Smyth
I have been a licensed art teacher for over 21 years. I earned a BA in Fine Arts with a minor in Art History from Purdue and recently completed my Master's in Art Education. I teach painting and ceramics at the high school level and I keep my own studio practice going as a painter and ceramicist. I work with students of all ages and skill levels, from complete beginners to people who already have experience. My classroom background includes supporting a wide range of learners, so I know how to adjust and keep things encouraging. I am patient and I focus on helping each person enjoy the process of making their own work.

I keep lessons relaxed and focused on what you actually want to create. We start by talking about your goals or just what you feel like exploring that day. I do a short demo when it helps, then we get right into the materials so you spend most of the time making. I give feedback as we work instead of saving it all for the end. Lessons work for complete beginners who have never painted or used clay, as well as people who already have some experience and want to grow. Kids, teens, and adults are all welcome. I have taught high school painting and ceramics for over 20 years so I know how to adjust for different ages and learning styles. My style is patient, hands-on, and personal. Art should feel good to make.
