I believe that it's crucial for learner's understanding to be able to relate to their topics (even in the smallest ways). This aids in building schema, developing understanding on a new concept/skill by building on top of previous experiences and knowledge.
I think a "typical" lesson plan does not encompass my teaching philosophy, as I think lesson plans need to be tweaked based on each students needs. However.... my philosophy which drives my lesson plans are as followed: Before any lesson, I think it is important to set goals and learning outcomes in collaboration with the learner. My lessons typically begin with building background on a given concept, either through reviewing our previous lesson, or through taking a personal experience, or research approach to introduce the topic/skill. Once baseline connections are made, we will begin to implement the new skill through engaging and transferable learning strategies. I believe each learner has different learning needs and have a toolbox of strategies to develop understanding on a new skill/concept. I will continue to give feedback and assess the learner's understanding through questions and reviewing practice of the new skill. Providing continuous support and challenge to aid in learner confidence and independence in that skill.
My lessons are suited for high school and undergraduate English/Writing/Media Studies classes. I can support in continuous lessons, or one-time, "need help on this essay" lessons.
I recognize school sometimes doesn't fit every learners needs, and would appreciate the opportunity to support the individual learner toward their goals.
