About Mary Lou
I graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Education/Mathematics. I am a "real" math teacher. I have taught math to elementary students, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics in junior high and high school, and many levels for college students. For example, my first student had dropped out of high school and had the opportunity to earn a diploma rather than a GED. She only needed her math credit. I was so proud to share my graduation gown from my closet with her and provide her with an authentic graduation picture when we finished. I have also helped a grandmother earn her GED, a mother earn her MBA, several young men and women prepare for the ASVABs (military entry test) and many students navigate through math, pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry courses on their way to high school graduation. I've also helped many people prepare for ACTs and SATs. I would love for you to be my next success story!

My teaching style is laid back and fun. I love numbers and want my students to enjoy the time they spend with me.
My students love that I'm often able to explain a concept in a new way that makes sense to them.
There are many words that are used to describe "teaching styles." The best words to describe my style is student-centered (it's all about YOU), student-led (this is your time), coached learning. I will guide you to do it right and then cheer like crazy when you can do it on your own.
I like to employ different methods. Sometimes a lecture is the only way. Sometimes, I give examples until the student says "OH, I get it!" Sometimes, we sneak up on the concept, and you didn't even know you were learning something new by doing something old. Doesn't that sound like fun?
I use the EDGE method of teaching. EDGE stands for Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, and Enable. I will give examples as I explain how and why we do the current topic in the math course. Guide you through doing it yourself. Then cheer you on as you do it yourself. I also love to provide "what's wrong" type of questions. When you can find the error, you truly understand the concept.
