Learning occurs through repetition, manipulation, and association. I provide the opportunity for all three. Multiple quizzes on subject matter provide repetition; Short answer quizzes provide manipulation of information through writing (and practice with vocabulary, grammar and syntax); association comes from linking what we know to what we've learned. In the end, much to our surprise, we have learned a lot.
